Macbook Pro crashes when idle or on lock screen or when it needs to sleep - Mojave Version 10.14.5
Hello there, I have recently been having the problem of my Macbook Pro crashing when it is idle or if I close my Macbook. I do not know what information bears relevance to diagnose what this problem is, so i am gonna furnish as many details as possible that may help. I apologise in advance if some info is TMI or useless. Needless to say, this is a freaking long post 😅😓
Here are my Mac specs:
MacBook Pro with Touchbar (15-inch, Late 2016)
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.7 GHz
Memory: 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
Graphics: Radeon Pro 455 2 GB
Intel HD Graphics 530 1536 MB
Here is how it all started:
This problem started after I updated to the latest Mac OS Mojave Version 10.14.5. I updated my Macbook Pro really late after the release - I only updated my Macbook on 7th July 2019 when the updated was released on May 13th 2019. I only updated it because my CPU began to peak in usage at 89% on the older OS version, even when there were no apps running. After the update, my CPU stopped peaking in its performance, but i landed up with this issue.
Here is what happens after it crashes and restarts:
Every time it crashes, restarts and I sign in again, I get the iconic Mojave sand dune screen with a window that says something along the lines of "you shut down your Macbook because there was a problem... If you wish to open your apps click open or wait for '--' seconds". But the thing is I never initiated any shut down. After that, it takes me to my now-restarted desktop where i get a window that says something like "your Mac shut down due to a problem. Would you like to send Apple an error report?". I have been sending error reports to Apple.
Here are some other funny behaviours my Macbook Pro has been displaying since the update (chronologically, from old to new):
1) My Macbook began to restart itself when it defaulted to my lock screen after left idle and connected to my monitor. It also crashed if i manually logged out to lock screen as is my habit. The black crash screen of death was seen once in a while during these crashes but not always. My files on my hard drive do not seem to be affected thus far but it is making me nervous.
2) My Macbook also started crashing from my desktop if i left it alone for a few minutes, regardless of what apps were open. Basically, the frequency and timing of crashes give me the impression that it would crash every time it needed to go into sleep mode.
3) Today, I took my Macbook with me when i went out with a full 100% charge of battery power. I landed up not using my Macbook at all for the whole day till i got home late at night. When i open my Macbook, it was just restarting itself from a crash (with the black screen, Apple logo and a progress bar instead of the expected lock screen), and the battery was now 1%. This led me to believe that my Macbook was not asleep in my bag, but constantly crashing and restarting itself throughout the day, the poor thing.
4) Late at night on this same day, I had left my Macbook idle for a few minutes midway through a project on Photoshop. It crashed with the black screen of death telling me to press any key to restart. Thank the lord for Adobe Photoshop's autosave and recovery - i did not lose my work. However, since this is now affecting my work, I am taking massive action now to diagnose and solve this once and for all.
Here is what I have tried to do so far from my end (chronologically, from old to new):
1) I tried reinstalling the entire Mojave update to mitigate any "kernel panic" issues. This was suggested from certain forums online. Didn't help much.
2) I have chucked away or backed up all unnecessary files and apps on my Macbook and have around 200GB out of 500GB of free hard drive space now. I can release more space so i will continue working on it.
3) I have tried running a disk clean up and optimzation with the help of a third-party app called CleanMyMac. Awesome app, by the way.
4) I have tried to run the native Apple Disk Utility's First Aid.
Here are the peripheral hardware that my Macbook Pro is usually connected to 90% of the time which i cannot do without (yes, dongles galore):
1) Samsung 28" UH750 QLED UHD Monitor
2) Power supply (yes it is constantly connected)
3) Seagate Backup Plus drive 3TB
4) A china-made USB Laptop cooler
5) Logitech Wireless MX Master 2S mouse Bluetooth receiver
6) USB C to lightning 2m cable to charge my phone
FYI, i use my Macbook Pro 90% of the time connected to my Samsung monitor.
I primarily use my Macbook for the following apps:
1) Google chrome
2) Adobe CC Suite - Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, InDesign, Acrobat
3) Logic Pro X
Thank you so much for reading all this. I apologise again for the long post. I hope we can find a solution together 💪😎👍
