Experiencing input latency with LG Ultrafine 21.5 and Macbook Pro

I'm experiencing a consistent latency when I'm using my LG Ultrafine 21.5 monitor with my Macbook Pro. Moving the mouse or using the keyboard has a slightly noticeable delay to it that I've never experienced with other external displays. The delay is always present to the same degree. It doesn't seem to matter if my MacBook Pro is open or closed with it, or if I use a "scaled" or default resolution on the LG Ultrafine. It started a couple of weeks ago after two years of using the monitor, so I'm not sure if it's related to a software or OS update or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

<<It has the physical Thunderbolt icon in it>>

Perfect. That is exactly the right cable to be using. There are lots of other choices that would work badly.

That MacBook Pro should have no trouble keeping up with that displays using that correct cable.

--------

Your display can only keep up if it is not being bogged down with too much divergent stuff running at the same time or certain hardware issues. To analyze, download and run Etrecheck, a little 'discovery" Utility, change its preferences to "allow full disk access" and run its report. When completed, post the report to a reply on the forums, using the third icon form the right in the reply window, (Tool-Tips shows "additional text" when you hover over it).

Thanks for replying and trying to help! I have to admit that I'm not sure what cable I'm using. It was suggested on an Apple Help page I read a few months ago, but now I can't find it. It has the physical Thunderbolt icon in it, but it's not the original cable that came with the monitor. Could you possibly recommend the correct cable if you think that's the problem?

My MacBook Pro is 2018 (About This Mac doesn't say if it's early mid or late) with these specs:

  Processor Name: Intel Core i7

  Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz

  Number of Processors: 1

  Total Number of Cores: 6

After looking into this more, I've realized that the LG Ultrafine is displaying at 30hz instead of 60hz.

If I switch to the lowest resolution, it changes to 60hz and is very smooth. Does anyone know why?

DEFAULT RESOLUTION 30HZ

LG UltraFine:

  Resolution: 4096 x 2304

  UI Looks like: 2048 x 1152 @ 30 Hz

  Framebuffer Depth: 30-Bit Color (ARGB2101010)

  Display Serial Number: 612NTWG2M537

  Mirror: Off

  Online: Yes

  Rotation: Supported

  Automatically Adjust Brightness: No

  Connection Type: DisplayPort

LOWEST RESOLUTION 30HZ - "LOOKS LIKE 1280x720"

LG UltraFine:

  Resolution: 2560 x 1440 (QHD/WQHD - Wide Quad High Definition)

  UI Looks like: 1280 x 720 @ 60 Hz

  Framebuffer Depth: 30-Bit Color (ARGB2101010)

  Display Serial Number: 612NTWG2M537

  Mirror: Off

  Online: Yes

  Rotation: Supported

  Automatically Adjust Brightness: No

  Connection Type: DisplayPort

Also in my System Report, it seems to say that my LG is connected to the USB2.1 Hub. Is this a problem? Should it be 3.1 or something? Is my cable wrong or outdated?

USB2.1 Hub:

  Product ID: 0x9a46

Vendor ID: 0x043e  (LG Electronics USA Inc.)

  Version: 52.26

  Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec

  Manufacturer: LG Electronics Inc.

  Location ID: 0x14100000 / 1

  Current Available (mA): 500

  Current Required (mA): 100

  Extra Operating Current (mA): 0

Okay, thanks for the response! What do you make of the monitor displaying in 30hz on the default resolution and then 60hz in the lower resolution? It's the 30hz that is causing the bad experience I described I believe, since when it says it's display ing 60hz, it is very smooth. I'm wondering if there's a way to get 60hz for the default resolution of the monitor and not just the lowest setting?

You are not getting the responsiveness you desire because you are running too much background junk. "Junk" in this context is stuff that may be perfectly good, but you don't happen to need at this moment, like stuff in the Attic.

CPU usage did not show up in the report you posted. The Etrecheck developer says that sometimes MacOS system calls simply refuse to produce the information. I expect if you quit Chrome or switched to less resource hungry Browser such as the new version of Firefox or new Safari, that would go a long way.

Activity Monitor (All Processes) CPU tab may show the reasons for the lack of responsiveness.

You have used up all 16GB of RAM in less than a day, and had to simulate an additional nearly 2GB on the Boot drive. That punishes responsiveness.

--------

Also, your Boot drive is encrypted, but there is no sign of a Backup drive. If your drive died at this moment, how long would it take for you to re-construct your files?. A damaged encrypted drive is generally unsalvageable. Time machine is simple and automatic and runs in the background without punishing responsiveness.
