locked pages document says "The file format is invalid" after moving to new computer

I recently reset my mac air to factory settings, but before doing so, i saved a pages document to my USB. This document was password protected, and i still know what that password was. After i reset my computer and moved the document from the USB to my desktop, i tried to open it but got the error "The file format is invalid". This document is very important to me and i would be very appreciative of any help anyone can provide.

You cannot convert a document format by changing the extension to .pages. Here is the message I received when changing a .pdf document to .pages. Same drill when changing a Word .doc, or AppleWorks .cwk extension to .pages. Changing .docx to .pages, or attempting to open an empty Pages document gives a different error.

Can you open that document in Preview? What other applications indicate that they can open it on the secondary menu Open With menu?

If you did none of the first paragraph, and it is an actual Pages document, then it has become damaged, and there is no recovery other than from a Time Machine backup prior to your copying it to USB storage.
