Mail unexpectedly quit, won

Using my 2016 MacBook Pro, Mojave OS -- opened computer this morning to a notification saying Mail unexpectedly quit. Every time I try to relaunch or start the application I get the same message. I tried restarting the computer, no luck.

I suspect OS X hides a cache somewhere that I can delete or some other nifty fix. Any suggestions?

Simple solution -- hold the shift key while clicking the app logo in the dock.
