Ok. I just downloaded GIMP-2.10.12. I opened a Finder Window before double-clicking the GIMP installer, which opened a second Finder window with just the GIMP application in it. I dragged and dropped this GIMP application into the first Finder window's Applications folder, and then unmounted the GIMP installer from the Desktop.

In the Application folder, I right-clicked the GIMP application and selected Open from the secondary menu. This opened a dialog on which I clicked Open again. A Gatekeeper verification progress panel occurred, and this was followed by another dialog about GIMP being from an unidentified developer. I clicked Ok and GIMP launched successfully. I quit GIMP. This is a one-time ritual for applications obtained outside of the Mac App Store.

I was then able to single-click GIMP in the Launchpad with it opening normally, ready for usage.
