iOS 12.4 Charging Stopped Working

Thought this would help others out there. Are you using a non-Apple charging cable? Has your iPhone or iPad stopped charging after installing iOS 12.4? I recently installed iOS 12.4 and it caused my non-Apple charging cable to stop working on my iPhone 5s and my iPad mini 4. The Lightning cable that is used to charge iPhones and iPads has a chip inside it to authenticate the cable meets certain Apple design criteria and non-Apple Lightning charging cables have been known to stop working after an iOS software update, even those that have the chip and have been certified by Apple.


Cynical people will say it's Apple's way of getting you to buy their Lightning charging cables, but I've always used non-Apple Lightning cables because for my usage I need a longer cable of 10+ feet and I never had a problem with them, until iOS 12.4.


Your only solution is to buy an Apple brand Lightning cable or try another non-Apple Lightning cable. Make sure it has the certification logo. It'll be a rectangular box with rounded corners that say made for iPhone, iPad, etc. Sadly such branding can be easily added to any packaging by a bogus manufacturer or reseller so try to buy from a known brand. In the meantime there is a way to charge your iPhone or iPad that should work. It's how I've been charging my iPad and iPhone until I feel well enough (I’m sick) to get a new cable. This is what you do. 1- Make sure the charging cable is plugged in and ready to be used. 2- Keep it close to the charging port of your iPhone or iPad ready to be quickly inserted! 3- Turn off your iPhone or iPad and as soon as the screen goes black after using the sliding on screen button to turn it off, very quickly plug in the charging cable! If you time it just right the iPhone or iPad will now charge, BUT it needs to be left alone and turned off! If you turn it on before it is fully charged it will go right back to not acknowledging the charging cable and not charging! Leave it off and after however long it usually takes to charge your iPhone or iPad to 100%, then you can turn it on. You're iPhone or iPad will then be fully charged.


You can also confirm the charging is working by first noting your current charge level, following the steps above and then after ten minutes turn on your iPhone or iPad. If it is charging then your charge level will have risen. Once you confirm it is working then repeat the steps above leaving the iPhone or iPad off until it is fully charged.


This is not an ideal situation but can certainly save the day, especially when traveling and where you don’t have immediate access to buy a new cable. Incidentally, never update iOS, or any software, immediately before traveling.

This is not a dirty contacts issue. All my gear is well maintained and clean. This is a repeatable problem with iOS 12.4, as I have stated in my posts. I have also done the testing with multiple Apple chargers (please read more carefully before responding) , and two Sony USB chargers. The same results. Such chargers have absolutely no intelligent circuitry to cause this issue. Unfortunately Lightning cables do, hence this problem.

Identify counterfeit or uncertified Lightning connector accessories

Apple recommends using only accessories that Apple has certified and that come with the "Made for Apple" badge. Learn about the issues that counterfeit or uncertified Lightning accessories can cause and how to identify these accessories.


If you use a counterfeit or uncertified Lightning accessory, you could see these issues:

  • Your iOS device could become damaged
  • The cable might be easily damaged
  • The connector end might fall off, get very hot, or might not fit properly into your device
  • You might not be able to sync or charge your device

Only Apple makes the USB-C to Lightning Cable. There are no "Made for Apple" USB-C to Lightning cables.

Compare packaging and writing on the cable

To identify counterfeit or uncertified cables and accessories, look carefully at the accessory's packaging and at the accessory itself. Certified third-party accessories have the MFi badge on their packaging:

An Apple Lightning to USB cable has "Designed by Apple in California" and either "Assembled in China," "Assembled in Vietnam," or "Indústria Brasileira" on the cable about seven inches from the USB connector. You'll see a 12-digit serial number at the end of this text.

A certified, third-party Lightning to USB cable usually has company branding on the Lightning-connector end.

No, I have confirmed with multiple non-Apple cables *that were working perfectly before the iOS 12.4 update* and with a second Apple charger, that the iOS 12.4 update is responsible. I am also getting a USB accessory notification on both my iPhone and my iPad. iOS 12.4 broke the ability for all my non-Apple cables to charge my iDevices, and all the cables I have are certified cables.


*I can also charge every time with no problem using the ridiculously inconvenient procedure I outlined in my original post, but I can not charge either my iPhone or iPad while either is on, again as I described in my original post.


I repeated these results over 100 times each. Everything is I have described in my posts!

I have submitted feedback to the Apple Feedback page for both the iPhone and iPad for this issue. Please, if anyone else is having the same issue then please submit feedback. This forum is not the place to complain about Apple bugs. The more people properly provide feedback to their feedback page linked below, the much better chance something like this will be fixed. My cables were not cheap, as they are 10ft. versions of high quality and now they are useless.

What was you previous iOS version, that is important, because iOS 12.4 only had the following changes. Please introspect how these changes can affect what you have posted.


Phone migration

  • Introduces the ability to wirelessly transfer data and migrate directly from an old iPhone to a new iPhone during setup

Apple News

  • Makes downloaded issues accessible in the My Magazines section, both online and offline
  • Adds all publications in Apple News+, including newspapers, to the catalog at the top of the News+ feed
  • Adds the ability to clear downloaded magazine issues by selecting History > Clear > Clear All

Other improvements and fixes

  • Includes a security fix for the Walkie-Talkie app on Apple Watch and re-enables Walkie-Talkie functionality

 

This release also includes support for HomePod in Japan and Taiwan.

I was pointing out what fixed it for me. I suppose it’s possible 12.4 is less tolerant to dirty contacts. That might explain it.

I have about a dozen 3rd party cables and am not seeing issues with those on my various 12.4 devices.

I suppose you have tried cleaning the connectors? (Could be the lightening port on the phone too).

It’s also possible Apple has disabled certain unqualified cables.

The other factor to consider is the charger: I’ve certainly seen issues with charging with PC or Mac if the software on those devices is not happy. Using a good quality 2+ amp USB charger (i.e. just charge, no data connection) is what I fall back to when having issues, if that charger doesn’t work then I try cables, and finally the lightening port.

I can confirm that both on iPhone and iPad after 12.4, some but not all aftermarket cables stopped working. However, I then tested the same cable that doesn’t work with an original or aftermarket charger using a Samsung charger and it works! I guess they’ll get it right in 12.5 and it’ll all just stop working!

I purchased new cables and looked specifically for the "Apple MFI Certified" and they worked. Alot of the cables I see that say "compatible with iphone", are not Apple MFI Certified. I bought the Car and Driver Apple MFI Certified Premium Nylon Braided cables from Amazon. Nice and sturdy and work fine with iPhone (6 and 8) and iPad. And they are more expensive, which is probably the point.

I have exactly the same problem. I have an iPhone SE which has worked happy with non-apple chargers up until 2 weeks ago when I upgraded to iOS 12.4 and now, not only do none of my chargers work but the battery only lasts 24 hours if that from full charge to empty. The only way I can charge my phone is by using my wife’s original charger cable from her more modern iphone8 but even that is temperamental and requires it to be connected/disconnected/wiggled around in the charging

port several times before it eventually registered as having a charger connected and the lightning bolt symbol appears next to the battery icon. Often when connected it will toggle between charging/not charging status very quickly beeping repeatedly as it does so until it eventually settles down in one state or the other - I just have to pray that it remains on the charging status and then not touch the phone until it’s fully charged for fear of disrupting

Also if I ever have the misfortune to let the battery completely drain until the phone won’t switch on, Its immensely stressful trying to get it to start charging from 0% as I have no way of knowing whether the phone has detected that the charger is connected or not. Whereas it used to take just a couple of mins of the phone being connected to the charger before it powers itself on automatically showing 4 or 5 %, now if by shear chance the charger is charging it takes about 30 mins before enough power can be drawn from the battery to power on.

How can upgrading the iOS software almost completely disable the phones capability to charge and make the process sooo stressful?!

Is there a way that I can reverse the upgrade and roll the software back to the previous version to get rid of the problem? I wish I hadn’t upgraded the software as I’ve not noticed any benefits, advantages or new improved functionality with iOS 12.4, only misery😖
