Best monitor for Macbook pro mid-2012?

I'm a photographer and have used my laptop and iMacs for photo editing for years, but have recently made the decision to buy a monitor of my own (the iMacs were property of my school and I shared one with an ex gf).

I want to be able to close the macbook, set it aside on my desk, and use the external monitor along with USB mouse and Bluetooth keyboard, daily. Any suggestions for the appropriate-era monitor to go nicely with my mid 2012? I prefer apple-made displays, but I think they stopped making them in 2016 correct?

Any HDMI or Display Port monitor will work.

Use extended desktop mode in clamshell mode to best set the resolution of the external display.
