Dolby Vision content displaying distorted since tvOS 12.4 update.

Anyone else having their Dolby Vision content in iTunes and Netflix display distorted during certain scenes throughout movies.

Turning Match Content off, fixes it but it also removes the Dolby Vision, and only plays in HDR. Worked fine before the 12.4 update. I even spent the money on new Belkin HDMI cables (Belkin UltraHD 8K HDMI 2.1 Cables), from the apple store which did not help.

I have exactly the same fault. I have also bought the Belkin high speed cable from Apple, no better. During dark scenes it seems to ‘bloom’ the colours and can look like a painting almost. I have read that Dolby made some updates recently to correct some issues with hdmi implementation and that early Dolby enabled TVs may now be unsupported. However I have watched a couple of Netflix series in Dolby in the last few days using the Apple TV and there seems to be no issue at all with Dolby over HDMI to the LG 60UH850 and no issue using the smart TV app either. The problem seems to be isolated to iTunes Dolby Vision movies being streamed .

Hi mate, no all I can say is I’ve narrowed it down to be an iTunes movies Dolby vision codec issue. I’m aware that Dolby made some changes in the last 6 months or so to fix other issues with hdmi sources. Since our TVs have no problem displaying Dolby from the Netflix app running on the Apple TV, this seems to indicate that either the Apple TV app or the iTunes movies are not using the correct Dolby Vision codec. As I wasted half an hour on hold to Apple support and both iTunes support faults I logged were bounced back telling me to call Apple support I have resigned myself to the fact that I’ll have to watch my movies in HDR until Apple consider it worthy of an update. Pretty poor after investing hundreds on 2 Apple TV’s and a ******** of movies in the last 2 years believing it was the best way to build a 4K library.

In a copy of Sound & Vision magazine I discovered some details about Dolby Vision. I struggled with color shifts not staying consistent, especially human faces. What I read is Dolby Vision is fee based and most networks are not paying for it. Once I shifted Apple TV 4K to HDR and my LG television to HDR the problems stopped. Apparently, this is an issue with the TV networks and Dolby and not Apple TV nor any TV set.

Hey guys, so I actually experienced this issues outside of Apple content today while watching Lost in Space on Netflix in DV. If any of you would like to see if you experience a similar issue it's S01E04 of Lost in Space at about the 45 minute mark. It gets extremely dark in these scenes. Just tried it through the Netflix app on the Vizio TV and it looks perfectly fine.

As far as I can tell, reading all the threads from different places I could find this issue on, the problem seems isolated to Dolby Vision content from Apple TV+, iTunes content with Dolby Vision (only certain titles as far as i can tell) and certain Dolby Vision videos on Netflix (Lost In Space as an example).

All of these issues are when using the Apple TV 4K as the streamer.

Just an update that there is still a Dolby Vision bug with Apple TV 13.2. I see it on two different Dolby Vision capable TVs (Vizio 2019 M series and TCL 2019 6 series). It only happens in very dark senes and it is obviously a DV interpretation bug in the encoding stream of Apple Movies. It doesn’t seem to happen with DV content in the Netflix app. Match Content setting has no effect. HDMI cables and network pass the connection tests built into Apple TV.

Just chiming in to say that I have this issue on a Philips 55PUS7304 television. I'm using a high-speed 8k Belkin cable in order to eliminate cable speed as a factor. I'm not seeing the distortion on the TV's built in apps for Dolby Vision content, however I'm also not seeing it on the Apple-TV's Netflix and Amazon Prime Video apps - purely Apple Dolby Vision content purchased on iTunes. Perhaps an authoring error on Apple's end leading to incorrect tone mapping on certain TVs?

From what I've seen the recommended setting is to do 4K SDR and range and frame matching turned to on because there can be issues "upscaling" SDR content to HDR. I'd imagine that if you compare Dolby Vision content played directly off the ATV compared to airplayed content you'll see a difference. I just tried airplay to my vizio directly and it was 720p and SDR. Airplay to the ATV shows 4K, but I think it's actually 720p as well and it shows SDR. Airplaying from an iPhone 8 Plus, not sure if that matters.

Also just going to drop this here in case anyone comes here because of this scene about halfway through episode 4 of For All Mankind:

Well I bought a new LG TV model UM8070PUA

https://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-86UM8070PUA-4k-uhd-tv

and all of my Dolby Vision issues are not showing up on this new TV. I wonder if Dolby came out with a newer version of Dolby Vision. I also had an Xbox One S hooked up to my old TV that had Dolby vision issues and in the video settings of the Xbox it always said that I could not play Dolby Vision on the Xbox because I had an older version of Dolby Vision on my TV. I Hooked up the same Xbox to this new TV and it recognized my Dolby Vision and allowed for all of the video output options. I checked several iTunes movies that were showing distorted scenes and so far all of them no longer have the distortion. I wonder if we all needed a newer version of Dolby Vision or a newer TV.
