If Zoom is crashing your Mac

Hi everyone,

I recently updated my 2019 Macbook Pro to 10.14.6 and since then every time I use my video camera (FaceTime, MS Teams, Zoom, etct) the OS crashes or just the machine hangs.

I even re-installed macOS twice and the issue now continues! My first macOS reinstall I used Time Machine to recover apps and my files - that didn't work. The second macOS reinstall I didn't use Time Machine, my laptop crashed within an hour of using FaceTime or any app that uses the video camera.

I even reset SMC and this didn't help either.

I'm considering bringing my laptop to the Apple Store and have them replace it - the laptop is not even two months old.

Any suggestions?

Well, I took my laptop to my closest Apple Store and let me tell you that I'm somewhat disappointed.

First, they were quick to blame a 'third party' application when there were no applications loaded on my laptop as I left it as a 'clean' install with no apps other than whatever is bundled from Apple. On their technical forums (as they refuse to look at these or read these notes as I politely asked them to) there's no mention of issues reported other than Skype and the camera after update 10.14.6 - so they kept insisting that the issue was Skype! I told them there is no Skype app installed!

Second, this is a month old laptop with Apple Care and after two complete MacOS re-install they're not allowed to replace the laptop as it may be a software issue. Finally they stopped chanting 'third party' application issue. The store manager was pleasant to speak to but when I was dealing with the floor technician I believe he took offense on how knowledgeable I was and I wasn't buying his bs comments and explanations. I also challenged him on several of his comments and he seemed to get annoyed at that.

Finally the laptop crashed after 15 minutes of FaceTime use!

They're keeping the laptop for repairs and will keep it for at least a week.

I guess I have to follow the same mantra I used to follow with Windows updates - wait at least two months before upgrading.

Another update:

All of the apps mentioned here: Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, even Slack calls - they all work fine when video is disabled. It's the moment the camera is turned on and streamed outwards that the crashes happen. Usually within about 30-45 seconds. Receiving streaming video is fine, it's broadcasting where the issue lies.

This is ABSOLUTELY not a 3rd party software issue, let alone one from a singular piece of software (ie. working with just Zoom to fix a problem might not cut it).

I have the same problem.

I got 2018 15" MacBook Pro with Mojave 10.14.6, and every time I use a video calling app (Skype, FaceTime, GoToMeeting), my laptop ends up crashing. Usually it happens when a video call is longer than an hour, but few times it happened to me after around 30 minutes. I hope that Apple will address it swiftly.

Its already known that an external web cam will work but its absolutely unacceptable that this issue is a month old and I have to tell my attorneys to use a $20 clip on webcam to make their $3000 MacBook pro work for web conferences. We are a virtual law firm and use Zoom a lot and to have to outfit 50+ laptops because of a kernal panic that Apple could fix with a supplemental update is ludicrous.

In my experimentation, I found that plugging in an external USB camera but not even using it in Zoom, continuing to use the built-in camera, would prevent the crash. After five minute meeting of no problem, meeting still running, unplugging USB camera, 30-45 seconds later, computer restarts. Repeated three times, same result.

Anyone else care to try that?

Apple just now released a supplemental update for 10.14.6 which is supposed to fix sleeping Mac's that crash and other things. Installing it right now, will report in a couple of days if it fixed the issue for me.

After installation: macOS 10.14.6, Build 18G95, T2 firmware was updated to 16P6571, Boot ROM stayed at 220.270.99.0.0.

I don't know what they fixed with that latest 10.14.6 Supplemental update, but it's definitely not the camera & kernel panic issue. My MBP (2019, 15'' base model) experienced yet another kernel panic during a FaceTime video call. Same story: the computer suddenly froze during the call. About 10-15 seconds later, the fans started spinning fast for a couple of seconds and immediately after the MBP restarted.

So I would like to know why they released a 1.25GB supplemental update that did NOT fix this issue. Its putting millions of dollars of their “pro” equipment in a holding pattern and honestly is 100% unacceptable that its been almost a month now since their update broke this. Can anyone get through to Apples engineers for an update?

If someone tells me the solution is to reinstall Mojave from recovery mode and I have to do that on 50+ machines that are all across the country I will go ape ****. That is a 100% unacceptable solution from Apple and hopefully its just one option for the immediate need but there has to be a solution coming in a software update.

Someone from Apple's support suggested me to install high sierra on an external hard drive (don't know how, can't even download previous OS from apple), and if the problem persists, I should take my MBP (15, 2019, base model) in again. If there's no problem with HS, I should wait for Catalina, beacuse there is where the devs time focus is at.

Catalina release is expected to be next month.
