If Zoom is crashing your Mac

Hi everyone,

I recently updated my 2019 Macbook Pro to 10.14.6 and since then every time I use my video camera (FaceTime, MS Teams, Zoom, etct) the OS crashes or just the machine hangs.

I even re-installed macOS twice and the issue now continues! My first macOS reinstall I used Time Machine to recover apps and my files - that didn't work. The second macOS reinstall I didn't use Time Machine, my laptop crashed within an hour of using FaceTime or any app that uses the video camera.

I even reset SMC and this didn't help either.

I'm considering bringing my laptop to the Apple Store and have them replace it - the laptop is not even two months old.

Any suggestions?

Well, I took my laptop to my closest Apple Store and let me tell you that I'm somewhat disappointed.

First, they were quick to blame a 'third party' application when there were no applications loaded on my laptop as I left it as a 'clean' install with no apps other than whatever is bundled from Apple. On their technical forums (as they refuse to look at these or read these notes as I politely asked them to) there's no mention of issues reported other than Skype and the camera after update 10.14.6 - so they kept insisting that the issue was Skype! I told them there is no Skype app installed!

Second, this is a month old laptop with Apple Care and after two complete MacOS re-install they're not allowed to replace the laptop as it may be a software issue. Finally they stopped chanting 'third party' application issue. The store manager was pleasant to speak to but when I was dealing with the floor technician I believe he took offense on how knowledgeable I was and I wasn't buying his bs comments and explanations. I also challenged him on several of his comments and he seemed to get annoyed at that.

Finally the laptop crashed after 15 minutes of FaceTime use!

They're keeping the laptop for repairs and will keep it for at least a week.

I guess I have to follow the same mantra I used to follow with Windows updates - wait at least two months before upgrading.

Update from Apple: The engineers are aware of this exact issue, they have numerous reports and are currently working on a fix. It is most likely a software bug which most likely will be fixed with an update, but the senior advisor does not have detailed information about that. He also said he does not know if the fix is going to be released as a Mojave Supplemental Update or if it gets included into Catalina.

It seems to me that this platform right here is mainly a user forum. Better file a bug report at apple.com/feedback or get in touch with technical support. I've done the former. Presumably, bug reports reach the MacOS development team eventually. I expect that the more reports they receive about an issue, the more likely it becomes that they will prioritize solving it.

I have the same issue. I use Google Hangouts and Microsoft teams predominately and not every-time but always at the worst time my computer's screen will freeze and then the whole computer will crash and turn off. It is ridiculously annoying. It also seems to use a lot of processing capacity as usually the fan is at full blaze.

I have already had to replace my Mac twice for hardware issues. I got the original in Feb 2019. My current one (3rd one) is not a cheap computer but I got it for stability and speed, i am thus far quite disappointed. I would love to find a solution that does not require me taking my computer back again..!

Hi,

I'm experiencing the same issue with my 1 ½ month old MacBook Pro 15" 2019. After updating to 10.14.6 using Skype/FaceTime is a gamble at which time the laptop crashes and restarts. While this happens the trackpad turns rock solid.

I contacted the apple support which suggested to turn off the automatic graphics switching. However this resulted (in my subjective opinion) in faster crashing of my laptop. Very disappointing for a 2,500 $ laptop... I really hope there is a fix in the very near future!

I'm now using my MacBook Pro early 2011 for FaceTime/Skype again as this machine is running without any issues.

I have this issue too. All side effects of the horrible software engineering pattern called Agile. Modus operandi of Agile, release half baked items and allow people to fight on discussions forums. Crap.

But I face this issue frequently when I use video chat in Microsoft Teams. I have the following configurations

Hardware Overview:

  Model Name: MacBook Pro

  Model Identifier: MacBookPro15,1

  Processor Name: Intel Core i7

  Processor Speed: 2.6 GHz

  Number of Processors: 1

  Total Number of Cores: 6

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

  L3 Cache: 9 MB

  Hyper-Threading Technology: Enabled

  Memory: 16 GB

Boot ROM Version: 220.270.99.0.0 (iBridge: 16.16.6568.0.0,0)

I have already raised an issue in the tech community support team of MS Teams. Now it looks like this is an issue with Mac.

Please help me resolve this issue.

Same issue - Skype/FT/Hangouts/Zoom - right after the update to Mojave 10.14.6

2018 MBP- 15in 2

2.2 GHz Intel core i7

16 GB 2400 DDR4

Radeon Pro 555x 4GB

Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

Would be nice to have this resolved as quickly as possible as the majority of my daily meetings are via one of the various 3rd party applications which utilizes Video.

Thanks for your assistance!

Hello

I am having this issue as well. I just purchased the latest macbook pro. I used Slack and Zoom often to share my webcam on client calls. No problems on the 2016 macbook. The new macbook will crash within 2 minutes of sharing webcam on any app. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Zoom and the issue persists. The issue will not trigger until my webcam is shared.

When it crashes, it is the same consistent behavior every time. The computer will freeze and within a few seconds power down and restart.

This is definitely a problem that Apple needs to be looking into. I can assure you it is not related to the third party apps.

Thank you.

Been having the same problem. Brand new MacBook Pro 15 2019. Ran flawlessly out of box but crashed on the first FaceTime video call and then every FaceTime video call after. Audio FaceTime worked fine. Video crashes my computer and everything. Every time...then I updated my iCloud settings on my MacBook and iPhone. (had to turn keychain on on my iPhone to get it to work) and now it works flawlessly with video FaceTime. Not bullying or trolling and I definitely know my way around both windows and Mac OS'(x)s. Not having your iCloud stuff in order can really mess stuff up. Hopefully it'll be all good with Sidecar in the new Catalina!! I mean, it's the Catalina Fu&*I %^ wine mixer

I'm having this issue as well since updating to 10.14.6.

I live in Israel and sent the MBP to Apple's official lab which found nothing wrong with my laptop and decided that

probably Skype and Zoom are not "fully compatible" with the OS.

Also happens on another new MBP of a colleague.

Very frustrating to have calls with clients suddenly dropping and having to use my iPhone instead for a business call.

Having the same issue as well, to the detriment of my work and company. This is really frustrating. It's anytime video is employed - will continue to troubleshoot whether or not it's the camera, ANY incoming streaming video, different software, etc - but it seems ubiquitous across all software and was NOT apparent until I begrudgingly updated my OS.

I find it infuriating that this is diagnosed as a hardware issue by Apple, when even general evidence in this thread supports the idea that it's directly attributable to the OS change.

Judging from the symptoms (kernel panic during video calls since the update to 10.14.6) it seems you're facing the same problem. Comparing your crash logs with those of other users may help verify that this is indeed the case. The fact that so many of us have started seeing this problem after the update to 10.14.6 and while using different applications for video calling (FaceTime, Skype etc), suggests that the issue is not app-specific, nor hardware related, but rather macOS-related.

You can try using a different video calling app than you usually do (e.g. Skype instead of FaceTime) to see if the problem persists. You can also run the built-in Apple diagnostics to check for hardware problems.

I don't think Apple engineers follow these discussions. Therefore once you've convinced yourself that this is a macOS-related problem, it would make sense to file a bug report.
