If Zoom is crashing your Mac

Hi everyone,

I recently updated my 2019 Macbook Pro to 10.14.6 and since then every time I use my video camera (FaceTime, MS Teams, Zoom, etct) the OS crashes or just the machine hangs.

I even re-installed macOS twice and the issue now continues! My first macOS reinstall I used Time Machine to recover apps and my files - that didn't work. The second macOS reinstall I didn't use Time Machine, my laptop crashed within an hour of using FaceTime or any app that uses the video camera.

I even reset SMC and this didn't help either.

I'm considering bringing my laptop to the Apple Store and have them replace it - the laptop is not even two months old.

Any suggestions?

Well, I took my laptop to my closest Apple Store and let me tell you that I'm somewhat disappointed.

First, they were quick to blame a 'third party' application when there were no applications loaded on my laptop as I left it as a 'clean' install with no apps other than whatever is bundled from Apple. On their technical forums (as they refuse to look at these or read these notes as I politely asked them to) there's no mention of issues reported other than Skype and the camera after update 10.14.6 - so they kept insisting that the issue was Skype! I told them there is no Skype app installed!

Second, this is a month old laptop with Apple Care and after two complete MacOS re-install they're not allowed to replace the laptop as it may be a software issue. Finally they stopped chanting 'third party' application issue. The store manager was pleasant to speak to but when I was dealing with the floor technician I believe he took offense on how knowledgeable I was and I wasn't buying his bs comments and explanations. I also challenged him on several of his comments and he seemed to get annoyed at that.

Finally the laptop crashed after 15 minutes of FaceTime use!

They're keeping the laptop for repairs and will keep it for at least a week.

I guess I have to follow the same mantra I used to follow with Windows updates - wait at least two months before upgrading.

PepsiGuy, thanks, great hint!

Another workaround is to switch off encryption, I believe. See below.

But to be honest, Apple for me is a complete worry-free solution provider and I don't want to play with workarounds. For playing tech I have much cheaper ultrabook with my beloved Linux. So my strategy was to talk to Apple to help them to recognize the problem, not the single laptop malfunction, because it takes time to find correlations, investigate and fix the problem.

Anyway, bad things always happens on a large scale and in general Apple's solutions works good for me.

Now, summary of my current knowledge:

  • There is a guess, told by Apple person, that issue correlated with encrypted drive (T2 used for this). I switched encryption off while re-installing MacOS and problem gone on my laptop! Tried to reproduce for a few hours.
  • Supposed issue fix is to replace logic board (Apple person)
  • It seems that issue affects laptops without T2 (reproduced once), but T2 makes the problem much-much-much worse (my observation)
  • On T2-enabled, issue can appear in minutes or in hours (my observation)
  • Issue affected some T2 laptops only (confirmed)
  • Issue is not affecting some newer laptops (unconfirmed)
  • It seems that Apple is aware about this problem and working on a fix

I'm experiencing the issues explained in this thread as well.

I'm using the 2017 Macbook Pro though, and the issue seems to come up if I use bluetooth headphones and stream music, as well as when I open Outlook, Zoom, some System Preferences menus, and seemingly randomly.

I had automatic graphics switching enabled but finally managed to make it through System Preferences to disable it.

Here are my system specs:

Hardware info:

Model Name: MacBook Pro

  Model Identifier: MacBookPro14,3

  Processor Name: Intel Core i7

  Processor Speed: 2.9 GHz

  Number of Processors: 1

  Total Number of Cores: 4

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

  L3 Cache: 8 MB

  Hyper-Threading Technology: Enabled\

  Memory: 16 GB

After todays' update, I do not see this problem. Had an hour of meeting involving several people with Zoom and MS Teams and nothing happened.

Thanks Apple for the quick fix and hope to see that we will not see any more Mac restart while having a video conferencing .

Thank you all for keeping this thread boiling and putting a peer pressure on Apple to bring in a quick fix.

Good luck! Please do let us know what the verdict is.

I doubt that this is a hardware issue, given the fact that video calls worked flawlessly prior to the 10.14.6 update. There are several articles online about Apple patching a camera-related vulnerability of some app called zoom. It would be nice if the patches for specific apps didn’t affect those of us that use the default apps, i.e. facetime...

I am also on a new MacBook Pro. Everything worked well until the update on Friday, August 9th. Now all 3rd party, live streaming services using the video camera freezes and restarts my computer. I use Zoom, FaceTime & Skype with clients as well as I take part in several weekly seminars through Zoom. The last time I used my (very expensive) new MacBook in a seminar, it shut down 4 times in an hour! This is not acceptable, Apple! Luckily, I can connect by phone but it is not ideal at all!

Hi all,

I have MacPro2019 and started experience system freeze and reboot while Video Calls (Skype, Zoom, FaceTime) since MacOS upgrade to 10.14.6. Clearly. Apple introduced a new bug with latest MacOS software update although they have not admitted it yet. Log files and tracing did not gave a hint for workaround so please posted any known workaround here.

I did something similar. For zoom, at least, I will turn on my video to wave 'hey', then turn it off and everything is good. Even if other users are on video it won't crash. (as context zoom and slack both crash video). My workaround is if I really need video is to use my phone and turn off audio on it so I can login with my laptop to screen share. Geez!
