In a web browser like safari, it would be on the very far left top corner ‘<‘ , or if you long press that you can find pages you visited further back. If that’s what you meant?

Do you mean the previous app you were in? On my iPad mini you can swipe up from the bottom and see the apps that are listed at the bottom of the home screen. Your last one used and favorites are listed there. Or if you came from an app there is a back arrow up in the upper left corner like if I go to Safari from Notes it shows <Notes in the upper left.
