My keyboard and touchpad suddenly stopped working leaving me stranded and without a laptop to use while traveling away from the USA. I understand that this is happening regularly to Apple users. What to do about it?

Unfortunately some problems can be intermittent which can be frustrating to users and techs alike since intermittent issues can be difficult to troubleshoot. With some Apple laptops the Trackpad and Keyboard are tied together so if the trackpad fails, then it can also cause the keyboard not to work. Don't be afraid to get the laptop checked out, techs are used to dealing with intermittent issues.
FYI, here are the publicly acknowledged free Apple repair programs currently available, but Apple also has some undisclosed programs as well.

In the mean time you could try using a USB keyboard and mouse until the system can be repaired.
My link was automatically removed but it was an article from macworld UK saying that the keyboard problem is widespread in the more recent Macs. I find this worrying because I am traveling outside of the USA and need a reliable laptop that is not going to let me down at crucial moments as this one has when needed to use on a trans-pacific flight of 13 hours and a few days later on a trans-Australia flight of over 5 hours during which I was planning to work.
I am now totally befuddled!!! For ten days I have been using an external keyboard and mouse and trying the laptop keyboard and touchpad each day and they were dead. Last night while I was working using the external devices, the Mac keyboard and touchpad suddenly started to work again and are still working!!! What is going on? Can I trust it?
I have made an appointment with Apple to have them look at the laptop, but am going to look like a priceless idiot telling them it just worked magic all on its own and fixed itself.
