Using Dell U2913WM with MacBook Pro (2019)

I have been using a Dell U2913WM monitor with a 2013 MacBook Pro without many issues. My new computer, a 2019 MacBook Pro with only Thunderbolt 3 ports, does not seem to be sending a signal to the monitor however. I have tried using a mini DP cable with adapter to Thurderbolt 3 (not recognized by monitor or computer) and an HDMI cable with adapter (monitor stays black and computer appears to recognize that it is connected to monitor only intermittently). Has anyone had similar problems?

Thanks.

The Apple ThunderBolt-3 <--> ThunderBolt-2 adapter produces ONLY Thunderbolt for a display signal at the other end. No other display signals are available, even with additional adapters.

You can not "stack" display adapters. You must make the leap from computer port to display input in at most ONE adapter, in almost every case.

Hi Fern_Lo,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today. It sounds like you want to connect your Dell monitor to your 2019 MacBook Pro.

This connection should work with HDMI. Are you using an Apple adapter? Have you tried a different cable? Have you checked for any firmware updates that your monitor may have from Dell?

Have a look at this page: About Apple video adapters and cables and scroll to "USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter".

At Dell UltraSharp 29 Ultrawide Monitor - U2913WM you will find a list of connections you can use: " Make it work for you, with extensive connectivity such as DisplayPort 1.2, USB 3.0*, Mini DisplayPort, DVI and HDMI® . . ."

Have a fantastic day!
