Restoring MacBook, Disk utility unresponsive

I am trying to restore my MacBook to factory. I followed the instructions to start up in safe mode and use disk utility. I got there just fine, but nothing is responding. I can’t click on any of the options, or the menu bar across the top. What do I do?

To restore a Mac to its factory configuration, you would use Recovery Mode, not Safe Mode, to first erase the system drive, and then, use Recovery Mode to re-install a "clean" copy of macOS.
