HELP - iCal on Macbook Air - all my Google synced entries have disappeared

Hi all

I use iCal on my Macbook Air running El Capitan, and I have it synced to 4 gmail accounts, home and work

Tonight I was just browsing and booking some stuff online, and when I came back to iCal to check a date, almost all my synced calendar entires had disappeared. All that's left are a few entries I put directly into iCal, and, bizarrely, entries from one of the synced accounts, but not the other three, which are my major work accounts. They are still in Google Calendar, and still in the calendar app on my Android phone, but they have disappeared from iCal.

I've tried the simple stuff - close iCal and reopen, reboot the Macbook etc, but nothing so far. I have backups in Time Machine if I have to go that route, but if this is a syncing problem I assume that wouldn't fix it.

Any suggestions? Thanks

OK. So this morning it's all resolved.

I see some people have clicked to say they have this issue too. It seems we are not alone. I also posted this on a similar thread on Google Calendar support - lots of people having the same issue - often multiple Gmail accounts, some syncing and some not. I tried loads of things - nothing worked.

Woke up this morning - refreshed the calendars one more time ... and sat and watched as all the appointments posted back again in Calendar??

Still none the wiser as to the cause of the issue - Google or Apple - but at least it's resolved itself which, along with all the other people posting on Google, implies it was a central issue somewhere, not anything on my MB Air. Unfortunately, if yours hasn't resolved itself, that doesn't help much.

One person on the Google thread said they fixed it. I didn't need to try their fix, but here it is for anyone who is stuck and wants to give it a go:

"I fixed the problem by exporting the given Google calendar in the web interface (top-right gear symbol -> Settings -> Select "Given Calendar" -> Export Calendar) => this saves an .ical.zip file => unzipping to an .ics file.

Then I imported the calendar again (top-right gear symbol -> Settings -> Import & Export -> Select the .ics file -> select the calendar name in the dropdown -> Import).

After the import completed in the web interface I refreshed the macOS Calendar App and all the events were synced ...

I hope this is a permanent solution."

OK. Another update. My son has a virtually new Macbook Pro running the latest OS, and he has just had the same problem.

So, I went back to Apple support chat and told them this was happening on both machines and, surprise, surprise, they admitted this is a known issue (relief). Currently they think it's a problem at Google's end (they would, wouldn't they) but they are working on it, so we'll see. Apple tech support have just called my son to see if they can get more data on what's going on.

In the meantime, as I can't rely on Calendar, I've downloaded a trial version of Fantastical, which gets good recommendations and was really easy to sync with all my Google accounts. The trial lasts 3 weeks, so hopefully it's fixed before then...

I'm not at all sure any more. I just checked my Macbook Calendar and everything seemed OK. So I went onto my 4 separate Google calendars and added one entry - all appeared in the Macbook calendar OK. So I reversed the process, and the MB Calendar entries all appeared on the Google calendars as well.

So, it all seems OK, but I haven't had to add/change/delete much over the weekend, so we'll see what happens during the week.

Additional update.

  • I still have all of my events on my iCal calendar on my Mac after the "export". However, nothing updates. If I add an event in iCal on the mac, it is not reflected in iCal on my iPhone, nor is it reflected in Google Calendar.
  • Events added in Google Calendar web interface do not update in iCal on my Mac or on my phone.
  • Events added to iCal on my phone *do* show up on Google Calendar online, but as noted above, not vice versa.

This is an unpleasantly big deal.
