Switching from Match to Apple Music?

Hi all

I used to have my music in iTunes Match for a few years now – the library entirely consists of the albums I uploaded there myself (i.e., no purchases). I'm about to try Apple Music now, and I wonder what exactly is going to happen to my library? Will it be gone (music and playlists) and I'll have to build it up from scratch using Music? Will it stay but I won't have access to it since I have no active Match subscription? Will it somehow merge with Music?

Thanks.

Apple Music incorporates all of the features of iTunes Match. It should behave the same way as before except that you can add new content from the iTunes Store to your collection while your subscription remains active. If/when you cancel Apple Music you'll go back down to your purchases and matched/uploaded content stored in your local library. I'd recommend backing up your library before you start using either service.

Just to clarify: iTunes Match makes all items in your iTunes collection available online for access to your other devices. Songs you have purchased will be available, as with 'Tunes in the Cloud'; songs you have for example ripped from CDs you have bought will be matched by the version in the Store if this is available; if it isn't available your copy will be uploaded for access by other devices.

There is a limit of 100,000 songs - this applies only to items not available in the Store (as purchased items are already available online). There is a charge of $24.99/£21.99 per year. The storage for these items does not count towards your iCloud storage space (indeed, though marketed as being part of iCloud it's actually nothing to do with it). Items in iTunes Match are not affected by DRM (Digital Rights Management which restricts where you can play them).

Once downloaded you can still play them if you terminate the subscription (though in that event you can't make further uploads or downloads).

As to Apple Music, as with iTunes Match, items which are in the Store but you have ripped from CDs, will be available as part of this, but if you don't also have an iTunes Match subscription DRM will be added to them and they will not be playable if you terminate the subscription.

Items you have ripped from CDs or obtained otherwise which are not in the Store's library will be uploaded in the same manner as iTunes Match and will not be affected by DRM.

So any matched items you re-download will be subject to DRM if you don't also have iTunes Match: do not delete your originals.

Thanks – it made things a bit clearer for me!

Am I correct in thinking that if I cancel Apple Music, I'll go back to my matched/uploaded content but won't be able to listen to it unless I renew my Match subscription?

And as far as concerns back up – do you mean backing up physical files? I currently have none on my hard drive, i.e. as long as another addition to my library is matched, I delete the files from the hard drive, and then I only listen to my music on my Mac and iPhone from the cloud using wi-fi or mobile data when outside. Do I need any sort of backup in this case?

I think you would have to set up the new iTunes Match subscription before you let Apple Music lapse otherwise you'd lose everything except purchases. You really ought to have at least one physical copy of all of your own content. If everything is in the cloud and you delete something in error there is nowhere left to recover it from. It should be easy enough to create a new empty library on an external drive, download all non-Apple Music content to it, then switch back to your regular library, and put the external drive somewhere safe.
