Burning a copy of a video dvd

I have just made a dvd movie from a VHS tape. It plays well. I have tried to copy this newly made DVD and I can't make a copy that plays. I keep getting exec files burned onto the DVDs. I have thrown away so many 'tries'. I have a Macbook Pro. My original plays on this just fine.

Unless you have something like Roxio Toast, it won't be easy. As far as I know, Disk utility no longer has that capability and any other attempt will not result in a playable DVD. Roxio Toast will do it as long as it is not a copyright protected content. The only other method I can think of is to "import" that entire DVD into iMovie or a converter and then export it from iMovie as a file so it's in the correct format to burn a DVD. At that point, you do need either Roxio Toast or another burn utility app if you want to play the content on a stand alone DVD player.

I just went through it on my mid-2012 Unibody running Mojave 10.14.6 with Disk Utility 18.0. I was able to create a DVD master disk image on my desktop. One of the right click options on the image icon is to burn it "to Disc". It might be worth a shot.

It's been a while since I've done it, but I think it's done in Disk Utility. Once the DVD mounts and shows up, one can right click on the name of the DVD and select Image from "DVD-X" or whatever it's called. The format is "DVD/CD master" without any encryption.

Once the entire image is created, I've been able to create a copy by inserting a blank DVD, then selecting the image file to burn it. I don't have an image currently to test the exact procedure, but I remember copying a few homemade DVDs that way. I'm just playing around with it now and I'll get back with the results after it's done.
