mail on iPad and MacBook air

when I start a new message on my iPad, a 'mail on iPad' symbol appears to the left of the dock on my MacBook air and clicking on this brings up the draft of the new msg.

However, the draft of the new msg. then disappears from my iPad and I am unable to complete it on my iPad. How can I stop this and can someone explain the purpose of this 'sharing' please?

Hello,

This is Apple’s Continuity feature. This allows users to easily switch between their devices when accomplishing a task. When you tap on iPad’s Mail icon from your MacBook’s Dock you are asking iPad to hand the Mail message off from iPad to MacBook. This also works the other way. If you compose a Mail message on MacBook you will find MacBook’s Mail icon in your iPad’s Dock.

Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch
