iPad Pro 12.9 Screen Light Bleed

My screen also has this issue, which I've seen posted a few other places. When I took it to an Apple store, they had a technician look at it and told me the screen was fine, maybe a few bad pixels, and offered me a credit if I traded it in for a new one. It's a little over (2) years old. I've brought in the original one I bought because the touchscreen stopped responding. They replaced it on the spot. I don't understand why they're giving me the run around this time.

Exact same issue here: Bought my 12.9" 2nd Gen iPad Pro in the September of 2018. Had it replaced in September 2019 and now, since September 2020, the exact same issue. The employee at the Apple Store already knew what the issue was before I even showed him the iPad - all I did was tell him I have a problem with my iPad Pro and he immediately said "ah yeah, the backlight bleed right?".

Only problem this time is that I am FOUR DAYS over the 2 year legal warranty in Germany and AppleCare Service and the flagship Apple Store in Frankfurt refused to help. Employee said that he doesn't understand how Apple can let something like this happen, especially with the most expensive iPad they sell, but unfortunately he wouldn't be able to help me.

My hopes are low though. Extremely disappointed. I have owned and still own pretty much the entire Apple Ecosystem of products for the past 10 years and this is absolutely disheartening.

This happened to my 2nd gen iPad Pro. It was still under AppleCare so they replaced it. It then happened to my replacement (i suspects replacements are NOT brand new, but refurbished). This became a problem with the replacement iPad while still under AppleCare warranty which I had to buy pro-rated since there was still time left on the original AppleCare Warranty. They replaced that one as well. I’m expecting the problem to reappear on my THIRD iPad Pro. This is an unacceptable issue for a device that costs over $1000.

Then again, it might be the added stress resulting from insufficiently rigid design for a product Apple could expect would likely be placed in a variety of cases. However, my thick, unshrunk stiff leather case does surround a plastic shell with no keyboard cutout (Apple Pencil is my keyboard :-) ), making one wonder why, as left and right sides are identical, the issue only appears on the left. I don't believe anyone has posted about issues on other margins.

In the end, I admit, without an investigatory finding from Apple, it's like guessing at Three-card Monte.

I will use the feedback link you provided. For anyone else with the same issue; I called Apple and explained what happened at the Apple Store. They suggested a third party. I made an appointment with a Best Buy store they recommended. The Best Buy tech said, yeah, screen bleed, and it’s just going to get worse. They couldn’t fix it either, and offered a lower trade in value than the Apple store. I’ve been amazed the best offer was $350 towards a trade in from Apple for a device I paid $1200 dollars for 2.5 years ago. It doesn’t appear to be holding it’s value as I expected. Bummer.

same issue.... i had the extended warranty but unfortunately my i pad pro was 2 years and 2 months when i just took it in, they said they dont repair these and offered a replacement at around $600. they said they had no idea what the problem was but implied it was caused by my use. They said third party repair may be able to do something, wondering if anyone has had any luck with that option? I really dont want to buy the replacement just to have it happen again , 2 years is not a good life span for a $1200 product.

I went to the Apple Store in November, they were asking over €600 for a replacement. With the same Gen. 2 model, which I refused. Doesn't make sense to pay for another unit which will fail again in a few months.

Obviously the large screen and thin edge is the issue here. A hardware design oversight. We can only wait and see if someone or some organisation will take up this issue in court to seek compensation.

If it does, you should be aware that iOS devices with the Home button fingerprint ID sensor, the Home button and sensor may not function properly after the screen assembly is removed and replaced.

Only Apple has the appropriate hardware and software reset codes to be able to reset the Home button and ID sensor back to working order in a repair situation.

Good grief.

The Apple Store Genius clearly stated that Apple does not repair these devices.

A home button that will not function properly makes a third-party repair unworkable.

And that means that my only option (other than living with the issue) is to chance an expensive replacement unit that could repeat the light bleed failure, potentially worse than what I have experienced.

It feels like I've been painted into a corner.

Regardless, I very much appreciate the valuable information you've offered, MichelPM.

You've joined a club no one wants to be a part of -- one, I suspect, that will have increasing numbers. My second generation and fourth generation iPad still work with no such bleed. We share in an apparent defect.

As not everyone experiences the problem, it seems not to be a design issue -- more like a bad production run from errors in assembly or a supply chain providing the occasional defective adhesive application.

If that does not spark joy in you, neither does it in me.
