iPad Pro 12.9 Screen Light Bleed

My screen also has this issue, which I've seen posted a few other places. When I took it to an Apple store, they had a technician look at it and told me the screen was fine, maybe a few bad pixels, and offered me a credit if I traded it in for a new one. It's a little over (2) years old. I've brought in the original one I bought because the touchscreen stopped responding. They replaced it on the spot. I don't understand why they're giving me the run around this time.

Same here. 2017 12.9 & 10.5 with different issues. 10.5 has A LOT OF “white spots”, and 12.9 has light leaks from sides. Don’t use too much so when i realized it, they were out of 1 yr warranty. Visited different Apple store in different country and called apple too. No help. The 10.5 screen is from Samsung and 12.9 is from different supplier. Those two screens are worse and worse everyday, and based on those Genius, they are NOT minor issue for sure.

Unlike the butterfly keyboard, Apple don’t make those screen. I am confused why Apple didn’t sue those suppliers for not meeting the quality in contract, and let them pay for it? Considering Apple recently paying Samsung $1 billion for not selling enough iPhone, it is not a bad move.

...it can and will get much worse: the good? news is that it eventually degenerates into a continuous bar of light along one side of the screen, which is terrible for uniform black levels across the screen but is at least much less noticeable if you're not looking for it...

...i wouldn't mind cross-grading to the current model except that it's only available with black bezels (and a space-grey case), which is poor for viewing in a daylit room: isn't the whole point of an ipad pro being able to work outside of a controlled-lighting studio environment?..

This is not normal - we bought a faulty piece of hardware. They are going to replace it with another piece of hardware that has the same problem - according to some of the people here the bleed will appear again maybe in a year or so, but lucky for Apple it's out of warranty.

This is not the first time this happens to me with apple hardware. I have a Macbook Pro 17" laptop I bought in 2011. I don't know if you know but they had faulty AMD Radeon video cards. I had it replaced twice, once while in warranty and second time out of warranty) but third time (yes, the 3rd card failed as well! ) they wouldn't do it. I wonder if they were forced by a class action lawsuit to provide the free replacements. Luckily I manage to hack it using information on the internet but I cannot install updates. So now, most of the time it's paper weight, maybe I will use it occasionally when I travel. That's another one that bothers me. If other people figured out a way to get it running using one video card why doesn't apple provide that solution? Of course, the answer is obvious, but it gives you a bitter taste. You know what I mean? One makes a load of money then they can also be more generous. But that's not the case.

I guess this issue with the ipads is minor compared to the faulty AMD Radeon cards (you can still use the device despite the visual annoyance) but nevertheless, I paid premium money for it for the device.

I also wonder what the fine print for the warranty contract spells exactly - probably repair or replacement with exactly the same hardware. I will take a look later though I dread reading that stuff.

I here in 2020 and I am on my warranty replacement and this has occurred again. Back story, I purchased my first iPad Pro in 2018 and it was replaced with the one that I am typing from now. I have an appointment to, yet again, get this unit replaced. There needs to be something stronger than this as this is a well known issue dating back to 2018?? The trade in was less than $315. WOW

Thank you, before replying I do have to say that I am a little concerned given that freedom of speech in actually getting Apple to do the right thing does not seem to exist. My original Post contained (pretty much exactly) the following paragraph, which was deleted by a moderator:

I am certain that the only legitimate, lawful and right thing for Apple to do, is to extend the warranty on this particular issue indefinitely, or at least up to 4 or 5 years. I have previously had an issue with the anti-glare coating on the display of my 2015 MacBook Pro and when I took it to an Apple-Certified dealer, they notified me that Apple had extended the warranty for displays of this generation to over 5 years. Apple does know about their design and product faults and there is an option for this to be handled the right way.

To LadyDi 102: I have already been on the phone with Support several times for a total of almost 4 hours and the maximum I have received was the answer that nothing could be done, that Apple could not possible handle this in goodwill (note that I am FOUR days over the legal warranty) and when specifically asking for their supervisor or manager, that no such person exists and that they are the highest ranking employee there (even though they often took breaks to consult and ask whether something could be done ...?!?).

When in the Apple Store, I was speaking to the kind employee for over an hour and he really tried to help me, but when he asked his supervisor and he came to speak to me, I was told that there was simply nothing they could do and that for some reason all warranty claims, even this one which is quite clearly a case of a production flaw, would lie with the Apple-Certified Store that ordered a replacement unit from Apple to act on behalf of Apple and Apple's warranty duties, telling me again that the iPad is out of warranty and there is nothing that can be done. They could of course not give me this in writing and he told me to call AppleCare again so they could verify that his legal interpretation is correct - which it wasn't and AppleCare told me today that there was nothing they could do because it is a replacement unit.

Do you know any ways to get someone higher at Apple to speak to? No one I have yet spoken to in this odyssey has seemed to have the competence or power to actually do anything other than say that the product is out of warranty...

Thanks in advance, I am a little relieved that others have this problem and that it is still an ongoing thing and not forced to rest (yet)

Again, my post was censored so i'll try over:

Apple does know about their design and product faults and there is an option for this to be handled the right way, but the only way to get there is to somehow, all of us affected by this, report the fault to Apple and/or hand in a jointly proposed complaint.

This sentence does not violate the Apple Support Communities Terms of Use, it is merely a repetition of what others have posted, stating that all those affected need to report and complain in this issue.

Affected here too over the past 12 months after the initial 18 months of owning a 12,9 2nd gen that has lived all its life atop a desktop stand along a bt keyboard - appeared suddenly and not spreading much and I have become used to this far from perfection APPLE DESIGN HARDWARE DEFECT - decided not to pursue replacement with some unknown history refurbished unit (if a warranty claim was accepted after all) since I have babied the battery for long term ownership. Also, it seems it is a matter of time before this light bleeding issue appears to a replacement unit too, per reports of users that have gotten a replacement. Not the first time I get not that perfect hardware from Apple at a perfect item price. If only I had a proper alternative...

Questions are what this site is for :-) The problem appears to be confined to the left (held vertically) margin -- no horizontal progress for me or reported by anyone thus far. I have not observed flicker, nor do I believe any others have reported flicker (in this thread). I doubt that you have reason to worry that this will render your iPad unusable. It will likely make its use annoying at times, but not unusable.

While there may be some information “gleaning” going on, here, by Apple, SpectrumAmiga6128, there is absolutely no guarantee.

Besides. If people only complain, here, and don’t avail themselves of the proper Feedback channels, it demonstrates, to Apple (assuming there is information “gleaning” going on, here, by Apple), that the people involved are not as serious, but simply want to be seen as complaining.

Of course, whether you take advantage of the proper Feedback channels, or not, is entirely up to you.

@myaka, myself, I have reported a Safari bug twice (all tabs vanishing whenever it wants, I am not the only one with this problem). This has been going on since OS version 13.0 until 14.0.2 for me (when I gave up and switched to Firefox for anything important). I repeat I am not the only one affected. NEVER heard back from them.

I had more than 5 different Apple hardware annoyances up to failures during the past 15 years I switched entirely to their ecosystem and have been using hardware since 1986 - Apple stuff is good but not perfect despite asking for perfect price. Many small examples during the years, the most notable being the antennagate - no, we were not holding it wrong.

as @MacTrek says, this is unacceptable for a device that costs that much - it took me a couple of years to pay it off.

What infuriates me is that they say nothing about such issues, like they do not happen or are singular user cases.

Once a local doctor returned a 27’ incher iMac due to some similar kind defect - the local representative did not accept Apple’s failure, the doctor made it public and he was bullied with a 200 000 euro court case to shut up (after much public ado, his 27’incher was replaced, it would not have happened if he did not make a PR mess).

On other occasions I have been serviced right by the same representative, fixing similar unacceptable issues as should happen for such expensive products.
