What can I do to see if this alleged Apple e-mail is legitimate?

The other day I got an email from Apple and it said I tried to sign in from an app that apple didn't recognize. They asked for some information including my social security number among other things. What can I do to see if this is legitimate?

Filling it in isn't in itself bad, but if you clicked the submit button, you now have a lot of work to do. And quickly!

If it asked for your Apple ID and password, you need to change that password NOW, before they change it and lock you out of your own account.

You'll need to contact Social Security and let them know someone may try and get your account redirected to another person or address.

If any bank details were involved, you must also contact them ASAP.

It certainly stinks, but don't feel too badly about it. Thousands of people get caught on these and similar scams every day.
