iPhone 6s Black Screen of Death after auto update (iOS 12.4.1, I think) September 2019

Not so much a question but a heads up: something "went awry" with the latest auto update and the bug corrupted my iPhone 6s. It was working properly for about 12 hours and then the screen went blank (could still hear audio playing, receive calls and texts, and could hear the iPhone "click" on and off, but the screen remained completely blank (black screen, no backlight). I tried turning off, waiting a few mins and then turning back on; I tried resetting by holding down the home and sleep buttons for 10 seconds; and I tried opening through iTunes.

Chatted with support: tech said that it sounds like the iOS update "went awry" and now the only thing I can do is factory reset my iphone and pray that my latest back-up wasn't corrupted by the iOS update. I've lost everything not backed-up to iCloud. This sucks.

Has anyone else had this issue after the iOS 12.4.1 update?

My iPhone 5s died a week ago. I’ve had it for 5 years with no problems. On Saturday I was reading an article when the screen’s perimeter turned red then started to turn black slowly eating the article up until it was all black. Boom. Dead. Nothing. I’ve been without a phone now for a week. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the iPhone 11 announcement happened a few days later. Perhaps Apple decided that it wasn’t making any money from the old iPhones and programmed the update to blow up them up.

I can confirm that my daughter who uses an iPhone 6 also had this exact same thing occur after updating to 12.4.1. Currently have tried all the "black screen of death" help pages online and none of them have been able to resolve the issue. The phone registers my gestures even with the black screen, such as shutting down when using the slide based off knowing where it would be. I have also tried putting another screen on that I have and still the screen is black. Looking online there is a lot of complaints from users with this exact same issue after the update. Hopefully apple will release a fix soon!
