Pop comes up: I can't play the dvd until I select a region for my new apple USB superdrive which I've attached to my new macbook pro. I'm selecting North America (where I am) Region one but it's apparently not correct? Stuck here.

Had this same problem yesterday with a brand new 2019 iMac and a brand new USB SuperDrive. Apple support had me unplug the superdrive from my new iMac and plug it into my old iMac. I was immediately able to switch the region code. Unplugged from old iMac, plugged into new iMac and perfecto. problem solved.

Note that the region you need to set it to, is the region the DVD you are trying to play is from.
It wasn’t the DVD but the drive itself. I solved it by simply restarting and trying again. Thank you.
Where did you get the DVD? is it a legitimate North American region DVD?
Remember you get only FIVE (lifetime) settings for that region code, then your drive is stuck there forever.
I just spent an hour on Apple care trying to get my brand new superdrive to work on my 2017 MacBook Pro running 10.15.1. I was told that Apple knows this is a problem and is "working on it" but offered no help other than to return the drive and "wait until they figure it out." It also doesn't work on my older MacBook Pro running Mojave. Wow
If nothing will play, it is likely a dirty lens or the drive has died.
I spent time over 3 days with Support on this problem and gave up. Every DVD tried gives the same message, "not permitted".
App Pull is still working on it.
Restarting did not correct the problem.
Brand new iMac 11/29/2019. New Superdrive 11/29/2019. Superdrive does not work. Will not allow me to set region to 1. It is frozen at -1.
John - glad to hear you found a solution. How old is your "old iMac"? I tried the same thing using a 2013 mac book pro running Mojave and it had the same problem.
After 6 months of knowing about this issue Mother Apple should have issued a fix. whatsup?

I have over 100 DVD's and NONE will play. As far as I know they are all US made. Region does not appear to be a problem. I am not going to experiment 5 times and end up with a useless drive.
