I just went through this (and, yes, spectrum is useless). Maybe what helped me will help you.

First, in terms of where to go: Go to Mail. The find your Charter (or Spectrum) account in the Inbox. Right click on that account and go to Edit [whatever that account name is]. Then go to Server Settings. That will allow you to make changes to that account. You will make changes in the incoming and outgoing server. if you try what I tried. Here is a screenshot of that window:

After a ton of research, I found out that there are a variety of server names that charter uses and you have to find the one that works for you in the incoming and outgoing server fields - where you see the arrows pointing to on my screenshot. The options seem to be:

  • imap.charter.net (incoming) paired with smtp.charter.net (outgoing) (Note: this is the old default and are likely what your current settings are.)
  • mobile.charter.net (incoming and outgoing)
  • mail.charter.net (incoming and outgoing) - this one is a bit obscure but is the one that worked for me. See photo above.

Also, I saw one person mention a combination of these worked for him: imap.charter.net (incoming) and mobile.charter.net as outgoing (yes, the mobile.charter.net sometimes works even on a Mac). So you may have to try some combinations of these.

Try these variations and see if one works. If one does, and you end up with multiple charter/spectrum accounts, delete the ones that don't work. (This process of trail and error may give you several charter accounts - it sometimes treats each experiment as a new account. Or it may not do that. It is very random.)

Good luck. This is a miserable process. Keep a screenshot of your current setting before you start in case you want to return to them.

Another option is to start using your Apple email address(es) and abandon the charter/spectrum accounts - just let them languish, unused, and switch everything to an Apple .me (.icould .mac, whatever you use) account. Or go to gmail. I have all of the above (as you can see!) and have far fewer problems with gmail and with Apple accounts.

I am so frustrated. Back and forth with Spectrum. This is my problem. I am unable to send outgoing mail. It started when I tried to send a document to a group. I send and it returns with"cannot send using the server blah blah. I have edited it several times. Spectrum is no help at all. The last person I chatted with showed me where to go to work on this, however I am unable to find the exact page .I know this sounds mixed up. I deleted my mail and tried to install again but the same info comes back in. Hope you can help. Thanks for trying
