MacOS Server vs SMB

Sorry for the double post...

What (if any) is the benefit of using MacOS Server vs connecting to my other machines via SMB?

We have a 2010 Mac Pro and two iMacs, all running 10.12.6. Those three machines, plus a PC running Windows 7 are connected via CAT6 to a time capsule.

In case it matters, I also have two iPad Pros and an iPhone 6s.

Thanks in advance.

Server once provided mail, chat, DNS, DHCP, Time Capsule, and various other network services, well beyond file sharing.

Server is now an MDM Mobile Device Manager package and a shadow of what it once was, so there’s a reasonable case for not investing in it. Unless you do need an MDM. I’d look at Apple Configurator 2 then, too.

You’re on a version that did more, but it’s a dead-end package now for much of what it once did.

Migration paths for existing Server users include maintaining your own server software (no small effort, and an ongoing one), using Windows Server or Linux or BSD as a server, or using FreeNAS, NextCloud, or using a Synology NAS box with its many available plug-ins. Or hosted services.

Thank you MrHoffman for your detailed reply. I’m definitely not looking to add any more maintenance to my music studio so I’ll just stick with SMB for now. Configurator does sound intriguing though.

As an aside, one of the greatest educators I’ve ever known was my middle school principal, also named Mr. Hoffman. I was a wild kid and he took an interest in my well being and set me on a course which changed my life for the better. I’m forever indebted to him, wherever he may be. I’m always inspired to tell that story when I meet someone with your surname.

Have a great weekend.
