IPad. Should there be an Airplay icon on Safari video screen?

I can Airplay a video from my iPad Air 2 to my AppleTV by bringing up the control centre and selecting to mirror then going back to the Safari video and playing it.

On my iPhone 8 I just play the video and tap on the AirPlay icon on the auto-hide menu that appears on the video screen.

Should I see this icon on my iPad Air2? Both devices on iOS 12.4.1.

Thanks! That explains it! I’m a bit slow in replying as I did some further investigations. I saw that several people had this problem caused by Safari not using the native media player. It seems that this could be controlled in iOS 12 via Safari’s Advanced Experimental settings but not in iOS 12.4.1

I wonder if it the option will reappear in iOS 13? Or in padOS?

I tried several suggested tricks to to force Safari to use the native player but none worked for me.

I did find that if I opened the website in Chrome then the AirPlay icon did appear on screen when playing a video. So that fixed the problem!

I was trying to watch videos on WTATV.com which is a UK-only subscription-only website so you couldn’t have emulated me. But I note that I also can’t AirPlay videos from wtatennis.com/videos in Safari.

It seems odd that Apple don’t allow the use of their own media player but seem to remember that Windows did something similar with playing DVDs.

Hello,

Starting with iOS 12 Apple gave the option for web developers to display their web video player on iPad instead of forcing them to conform to iPad’s default platter. That being said, there is something you can do to regain the desired functionality.

Pull down in the upper right corner of the display and open Control Center. Tap on the AirPlay button. (See first screenshot)

Once you tap on the AirPlay button a list of all available AirPlay destinations will appear.

This is iPad’s system AirPlay destination selector. Now when you watch a video in Safari it will play on your selected AirPlay destination. When you want to disconnect follow these same steps to select iPad as a destination.

Hello,

What website are you viewing videos on your iPad? Most often when you watch a video through Safari on iPhone, iPhone will open the video in the system video player whereas on iPad Safari will allow a website to serve up their own video player which may not always display features such as AirPlay, Picture-and-Picture, etc.

IPad. Should there be an Airplay icon on Safari video screen?
