Unable to update watch to new OS

After updating iPhone XS to IOS 13 I wanted to update my watch's OS. It keeps telling me it is unable to check for update (in the watch app) because I am not connected to the internet. The phone is connected to the internet and I have also tried reseting network settings on the phone.
