iOS 13 Music App album art is incorrect.

I've got an iPhone XR and just upgraded to iOS 13. I go to the Music App and the album art is associated with the wrong playlists for about 1/3 of the library - and when I close and reopen the app, the incorrect pairings of image to file has shifted (example: the album cover for a U2 album was showing for a YES album the first time, now the U2 album has the correct cover, but a Talking Heads album has the art work for a Dave Brubeck album...etc.)

I have rebooted the phone, re-synced the music library on the phone, even removed all of the playlists, etc. and re loaded them and the issue remains.

Hi all,

I'm not sure if the following has already been discussed, but here's a solution that works for me. It's somewhat time-consuming, especially if you have thousands of files in your iTunes library. As an indicator, I have around 4,000 files and the following takes about 45 minutes to complete. :-(

Before you begin, understand that your iPhone's music library will be erased if you proceed. So please take this precaution: ensure that the iTunes library on your computer contains everything you want on your phone: songs, playlists and cover art.

  1. Disconnect your iPhone from your computer
  2. On your computer, open iTunes
  3. Navigate to: iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Advanced
  4. Ensure Keep iTunes Media folder organised is deselected
  5. OK
  6. iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Advanced
  7. Ensure that Keep iTunes Media folder organised is selected
  8. OK.

This forces iTunes to re-read its library and rebuild links between files and their metadata.

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer via the cable
  2. Click the phone's icon, found immediately beneath the iTunes menu bar

** WARNING: HERE COMES THE RISKY AND TIME-CONSUMING PART **

  1. In the left panel: Settings > Music
  2. In the right panel: ensure that Entire music library is selected > deselect Sync Music
  3. Accept the warning, then click Sync. Your phone's music library will now be ERASED. Wait until this process is complete before proceeding.
  4. In the right panel: select Sync Music > apply. Your library will now be transferred from your computer to your iPhone, including cover art and playlists.
  5. Allow this process to complete, then confirm that your phone's music library looks as you'd expect.

You might be thinking, "Why do I have to blow away my phone's entire music library? Can't I just do a differential sync, and the errors that were corrected when iTunes re-read its library will be fixed on phone too?". I thought the same thing... but, sadly, it didn't work. Only a complete wipe/restore of the phone's library worked for me.

In case you're wondering, here's what caused my iPhone's cover art to go screwy in the first place:

  1. My phone was disconnected from the computer
  2. In iTunes I selected a playlist > clicked its cover art > selected a new JPG image when prompted
  3. I connected the phone to the computer via cable
  4. I initiated a library sync in iTunes.

Once the sync was complete I checked the playlists on the phone: the recently-tweaked playlist was showing the wrong cover art, as were several other items. Lesson learned: if changing a playlist's cover art, do it on the phone, not in iTunes.

Kind regards,

Jason Paris

I switched from an iPhone 8 to an 11 Pro and used the device to device setup which copied everything including my music over to the 11 Pro. All the album art was correct after finishing the setup.

Today I decided to back my phone up to iTunes and make a few playlist updates. When I synced the phone it messed up ALL of the album art on my phone. I have tried resyncing numerous times and still no luck. When I look "On My Device" through iTunes at the "Music" it shows all of the tracks greyed out with a circle comprised of dashes as if the music is not on my phone at all. But I can go to my phone and play every track just fine.

I see a lot of people saying they are only having the issue with playlist album art. ALL of my artwork is messed up, not just playlists.

Has anyone from Apple commented on this problem?

I’ve seen recommendations for CS Music Player... do you still just build your playlists via iTunes? If you add tracks on your phone to the playlist does it sync back to iTunes when you resync your phone? Does it work with CarPlay?

I still have iTunes 12.7 and I found this issue is prevalent with many reiterations of iTunes as well as the Music app. The only way I've kept ALL my artwork is to disconnect from WiFi AND put my iPod (or iPhone) in Airplane Mode. These prevent communicating with Apple which will change your artwork based on their sets of albums they use. If you want to use your own albums that will transfer correctly to your iPod or phone, I wouldn't allow any communication with your device and the Apple Store while you are synching...and again, by turning of WiFi and putting your device in Airplane Mode, you prevent that from happening.

I agree. I have spent five years getting the proper, high-resolution artwork for my iTunes library. I don't have a smartphone but have my music on my iMac, MacBook, and iPod. I have Sierra and am reluctant to move to Catalina as I'm pretty low tech, don't have playlists, and just listen to music. The only way I avoided the Apple Store putting their artwork on my albums was synching my devices with no WiFi and Airplane Mode on, thus preventing Apple from communicating. The only answer I've heard that is working for Catalina users with the Music app is that eventually, through shutting down and restarting, over time, the album artwork comes on...but...if it is the wrong artwork, you'll have to replace it, individually, and that could take many hours.

Hello, I have the same problem regarding Album art not transferring from Apple Music (iTunes) on my MacBook Air to my iPhone XS Max. Another issue was the Playlists had the wrong album for a playlist and the artist included in that list. I have read a lot of suggestions and many of them did not work. Some suggested removing all the music from the iPhone and then reinstall them. I removed all the music from the iPhone and did a hard restart. After syncing the iPhone from the MacBook all the album covers were restored and the playlist had the correct albums with the correct playlist and artist. I hope this works for others.

I'm lower tech than most here (I'm 73 and just got my first smartphone only last Christmas) but in my effort to upgrade from Sierra to High Sierra, Catalina popped up and still wasn't able to install it. I have a perfect iTunes Library with all my album artwork in place and knew Catalina might mess it up, so I took my iMac down to on of our many Apple Stores here and they said they'd install any OS I wanted free (my warranty was expired) so I picked High Sierra. I do like the beautiful images on the Music app that I saw in the Apple Store, but until the album artwork issue is worked out, I'm keeping my library intact. I've always synched my devices without WiFi and in Airplane Mode. That way, the iTunes Store can't put THEIR albums on your music as there is no communication, but with the current app, it seems those album covers are imbedded. Rather than go through the tedious task of manually restoring each album, I'd wait for a few more updates....or go to a different OS like I did.

Same here - new SE, seemed ok after data transfer from 6S, but artwork scrambled after first sync. Artwork on the 6S was fine, only the odd one missing. Now I have David Bowie artwork for Bob Dylan, April Towers on Al Stewart, the B-52s for Arcade Fire, etc and that’s just the beginning of the alphabet. Artwork for songs within albums don’t necessarily relate to the album cover. If only there was a setting to turn off artwork I would do so. I’ve tried syncing in airport mode but no dice. I assume the song titles correspond to the song?
