iOS 13 Music App album art is incorrect.

I've got an iPhone XR and just upgraded to iOS 13. I go to the Music App and the album art is associated with the wrong playlists for about 1/3 of the library - and when I close and reopen the app, the incorrect pairings of image to file has shifted (example: the album cover for a U2 album was showing for a YES album the first time, now the U2 album has the correct cover, but a Talking Heads album has the art work for a Dave Brubeck album...etc.)

I have rebooted the phone, re-synced the music library on the phone, even removed all of the playlists, etc. and re loaded them and the issue remains.

Hi all,

I'm not sure if the following has already been discussed, but here's a solution that works for me. It's somewhat time-consuming, especially if you have thousands of files in your iTunes library. As an indicator, I have around 4,000 files and the following takes about 45 minutes to complete. :-(

Before you begin, understand that your iPhone's music library will be erased if you proceed. So please take this precaution: ensure that the iTunes library on your computer contains everything you want on your phone: songs, playlists and cover art.

  1. Disconnect your iPhone from your computer
  2. On your computer, open iTunes
  3. Navigate to: iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Advanced
  4. Ensure Keep iTunes Media folder organised is deselected
  5. OK
  6. iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Advanced
  7. Ensure that Keep iTunes Media folder organised is selected
  8. OK.

This forces iTunes to re-read its library and rebuild links between files and their metadata.

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer via the cable
  2. Click the phone's icon, found immediately beneath the iTunes menu bar

** WARNING: HERE COMES THE RISKY AND TIME-CONSUMING PART **

  1. In the left panel: Settings > Music
  2. In the right panel: ensure that Entire music library is selected > deselect Sync Music
  3. Accept the warning, then click Sync. Your phone's music library will now be ERASED. Wait until this process is complete before proceeding.
  4. In the right panel: select Sync Music > apply. Your library will now be transferred from your computer to your iPhone, including cover art and playlists.
  5. Allow this process to complete, then confirm that your phone's music library looks as you'd expect.

You might be thinking, "Why do I have to blow away my phone's entire music library? Can't I just do a differential sync, and the errors that were corrected when iTunes re-read its library will be fixed on phone too?". I thought the same thing... but, sadly, it didn't work. Only a complete wipe/restore of the phone's library worked for me.

In case you're wondering, here's what caused my iPhone's cover art to go screwy in the first place:

  1. My phone was disconnected from the computer
  2. In iTunes I selected a playlist > clicked its cover art > selected a new JPG image when prompted
  3. I connected the phone to the computer via cable
  4. I initiated a library sync in iTunes.

Once the sync was complete I checked the playlists on the phone: the recently-tweaked playlist was showing the wrong cover art, as were several other items. Lesson learned: if changing a playlist's cover art, do it on the phone, not in iTunes.

Kind regards,

Jason Paris

CS Music uses your iTunes library and playlists - you manage your music just as you do now. On your phone it uses the Music app underneath - CS is simply a different presentation layer. This is why they tell you not to remove the Music app.

If you're willing to splurge $3, install the app and all the music already on your phone will be accessible. Its very straightforward and simple to use if you just want to listen to your library and have it stored on your phone. And your playlist artwork will be correct.

Not sure on Car Play - but I'm sure the developer can share that info with you.

They really need to fix this asap. The only way I can get the albums to copy over correctly is to wipe all the music off my phone and then add it again. The artwork issue happens when you then try to add new music to your phone, it grabs random cover art from albums already on your phone, iPad, etc... so if you move everything at one time, initially, it should look right. Adding additional albums becomes the problem. Which we all would want to do as new music comes out and we want to add it.

Hi again,

I think I'm beginning to understand the underlying issue here: the iTunes GUI doesn't automatically push changes to the library's metadata, so we need to do a 'manual push' to avoid cover-art weirdness on the iPhone. So, for every change made inside the iTunes GUI, toggle the iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Keep iTunes Media folder organised setting before syncing.

For example, if you add a song to a playlist... toggle the setting before syncing. If you change the cover art of an album... toggle the setting before syncing. If you re-order some tracks in a playlist... toggle the setting before syncing. You get the idea. :-)

I'd love to hear if this works for you too.

Kind regards,

I might be wrong about this, but it's interesting that you mention Talking Heads. I recently experienced this same problem, after adding the song "Love → Building on Fire" to my iPhone from my Music library.

I suspect that "→" character might be the culprit. I changed the title, and the filename, of that song to "Love Goes to Building on Fire" (apparently how you're supposed to pronounce the title), deleted all the music off my phone, and reloaded everything back onto the phone, and it solved the issue.

A weird possible cause to the problem, but I finally solved it - maybe that's what's happening with you too?

I finally found a fix that worked for me. So far I’ve only tried it on the TV app since the artwork on my movies and tv shows were messed up too. If you delete the app from your iPhone then add it back, all of the correct artwork shows up. Haven’t tried this for this music app yet but I am sure it will work. Since only about 20 of my songs are messed up I’m not even bothering. Let me know if it works for your songs. Good luck!

I had the same problem as everyone else. The Music Albums on my MacBook Air were not on my iPhone XS Max. Some of the album covers were on the wrong artist or playlist. While connected to my MacBook Air and in Finder I deleted all the music, did a hard restart on my iPhone, and then reinstalled all the music. Once the reinstalled was completed, all the album artworks were restored to their proper location.

There is a lot of suggestion on this forum. I tried several until I came across one that worked. Please, continue to try different options.

I'm experiencing the same issue. I'm so glad I've found this thread as I've discussed this with Apple Support on Twitter and it felt like I was the only one!

At first, I thought it only took place during a sync with iTunes but the playlist art alters randomly, always 'choosing' art from some other existing playlist. It can even change if I close the app and reopen. This happens in 'Recently Added' and the list under 'Playlists' but is always the correct artwork when I go to any album and album tracks itself.

It's true that selecting album art from another source (eg, a photo of the album cover from elsewhere) and changing it to that under 'edit' does fix the problem for that playlist but I find the four album cover artwork useful for identifying compilations and it's not so easy to create those.

If I do look at the app's library whilst syncing with iTunes, I can see the various album's artwork changing back and forth. Here's hoping for a fix in iOS 13.1.
