iPhone 11 Pro Max Camera issues

So my iPhone 11 Pro Max camera has an issue straight out of the box. The camera is blurry. It is so bad that my iPhone 6 could take better photos. Using the telephoto lense makes it even worse. It looks like you're watching standard cable. It's fuzzy. The ultrawide does the same thing. Leaving it at 1x helps but it still doesn't like right. Tapping to focus doesn't help. The photos my phone is taking are definitely not what I saw on the keynote. It looks terrible. Also, the interface is just bad. It's hard to use. Also, night mode reveals just how bad the camera is. For a Pro iPhone, I don't believe this deserves "Pro" in it's name. Or it's hefty price.

Is this on every image? If so, is there anything on the lenses?

As to the secondary issue, this may not be an option for you, but if you have room on a credit card for them to place a hold for the amount of the phone they have an option where they will send you a replacement phone and a box to ship yours back to them. The hold will stay on your card until they receive your phone back. I have done this several times because I do not want to be without my phone while waiting for repairs either. They do not charge your card unless they do not receive your phone. I believe it is called an expedited repair and you have to ask for it.

Apple didn't release these any earlier than in any other launch. Apple also doesn't make "special display" iPhones. That wouldn't be legal. They do put special software on the display phones to prevent users from making adjustments to the settings.

If someone feels their camera isn't working properly, they should schedule an appointment at their Apple Store Genius bar and if Apple determines the camera is faulty, the iPhone will be replaced.

Thought I would post an update after my meeting with Apples Technical Advisor. He was able to connect to my phone and had me walk around with the camera open while he saw the preview and then take certain shots and send it to him for even more analysis. He confirmed that my replacement phone is suffering on the ultra wide angle lens with the blurry issues and static. He’s going to reach out sometime next week after they investigate the issue. So if you have this issue reach out, as they need more examples of this issue to figure out exactly what’s happening.

Note this is about blurry/staticky issues with the ultra wide lens. I see a lot of photos on here now that claim to have an issue but look amazing or just have the typical lens flare that everyone complains about every year. If you are in great lighting, and your camera is still blurry then you probably are having this issue.

So I don’t know if anybody will try this, some people would rather complain than take the necessary steps to rule things out. My 11 photos look like trash and are grainy in the photos app. I have my phone set to download and keep the originals on it as well as in iCloud. They still look like trash. Last night, I went on my iPad and looked at those same photos and they’re beautiful. Crisp, clear, and bright. With that being said, that clearly rules out a hardware issue for me and may do the same for others.

I have the iPhone 11 & I’m having the same issues with my photos & videos looking grainy when I use my ultra wide camera. & my slo-mo looks extra grainy & really dark as well. The regular camera looks fine. I’ve tried seeing the photos & videos in other apps & devices to see if it was the photo app causing my photos to look bad but it all looks horrible. My phone is updated & passed diagnostics. Apple support had me go to Best Buy to have them see it in person. The guy agreed it looked really bad. Apple said to take it to T-Mobile first so I’m currently calling T-Mobile stores to find the exact phone to exchange since I’m still in the 14 day return period but everyone is out of stock & I’m running out of time & T-Mobile said if I want a new one without a $50 restocking fee I must to return my phone before the 14 days & that I wouldn’t have the new phone till 10 days after returning it because thats when they’ll be in stock. So basically 10 days with no phone whatsoever which is so ridiculous & the customer service lady said it’s okay I don’t need a phone for 10 days.... -_- This is so frustrating....

I’ve finally solved my own personal issue, all thanks to low power mode! As the battery has been so good I haven’t used it yet. First time today and noticed my photos looked fine, revealing it was clearly a setting.

Checked the photos settings and toggled the ‘View HDR’ to off (looks like it shows the full range from what the cam has captured). You can literally watch the image change as you switch with the setting, and explains why screenshots still captured the original.

I have been following this thread from the beginning and I have seen two issues:

  1. People have been taking poor photos because they do not understand how to use the different lenses, how to select a subject and properly aim the camera so it focuses correctly, and a number of other things that fall into the user error and/or limitations of physics categories. No hardware or software update will fix those issues.
  2. People who are seeing legitimate software issues because a photo looks bad in the Photos app but good on another device or even in another app on the same phone. To those people, I cannot recommend strongly enough that you perform a full wipe of your phone and perform a complete software reinstall from iTunes. There are millions of us out in the world who are not seeing this issues and we are using the same software version as you, so there must be something corrupt in the software as it is installed on your phone.

I wish you all the best!

Yes, the 11 Max Pro are the worse ones on the left, and yes, I think it's all in Apple's processing of the image - it sucks.

When I get home I'll shoot a scene again, but shoot using Lightroom mobile and shoot DNG/RAW which should prevent the phone from 'processing' the photo and give a better sense of what the Sensor itself is delivering. Should've thought of this before...

I'm surprised @rbrylawski hasn't responded to my post. And that wasn't meant as snark. I think his is one of the most reasonable voices on this thread.

Oh, and I am a professional photographer so I have a sense of what I'm doing...

Not necessarily required to use a tripod. But something else to keep in mind when using the Ultra Wide lens. It does NOT have OIS (optical image stabilization) like the Wide or Telephoto does. This means when using the UW lens, in any low light condition, ANY movement will help create a blurry picture.

I know people on this thread don't want to hear this, and please don't think I'm being critical of you, but the lack of understanding of the triple lens system, when to use which lens, what lighting they need, how long they need to keep the phone steady, etc., is what is causing most (not all) of the concerns people are having with their photos.

Sigh.......Does ANYONE read through a thread before posting? Clearly you didn't. If you're using the UW Camera indoors, it's a VERY poor choice of camera. The UW camera does not include Optical Image Stabilization and is a slow lens with f2.4 Aperture. It's only a good choice to use outdoors in well lit settings to capture a more expansive view. Before you say there is an issue, you really need to understand when to use which lens.

I’ve been to the Genius Bar and they basically told me I’d have to use my hand to block the sun while taking pictures outside. Lol. What? They did say that my phone seemed to be separating light a little strangely and I should try replacing it, but the way the cameras are designed with the glass, they are going to reflect onto one another... which is what you see in this (would be otherwise) great photo. The reflection of the lens are SO extreme and gross.

Nov 30, 2019 8:31 PM in response to mattrogers

Okay, so upon second Genius Bar apt they said my lenses were uneven and replaced my phone. This has solved the camera app freeze situation which was obviously a software issue. I’m waiting to see if my photos are better and I hope to experience less color issues and reflection. That said, I’m seeing something new now, strange light fragments or bits in the images. I just can’t win. I’ll take a phone that doesn’t freeze up in the camera app though. Ugh.

All,

I was mad because I had a faulty 11 pro, also was getting a bit frustrated by the comments here.

Returned mine and the more pictures I take, the more I'm convinced that the camera problem for MY device is fixed.

Instead of taking it out on a lot of people in this thread. Maybe it's time to return your device to Apple and keep doing it untill it's fixed... Even tho this means going to apple over and over again until u get a device that isn't broken. No it's not a thing you would expect to be doing after you paid 1350 euro's but that's just the real world.

Also as a few persons said on this thread, there is no need to post links about people with the same problem. Heck, even if 10000 people would complain this is still < 5% of the total sold devices... which means that 90-95% of the people don't have the problem and are happy with the device.

Don't think that you need to buy another device since you bought the Iphone with a reason, but you'd better spend your time in a real apple store then on this thread... The faster you will get a device that "works as promised".
