WEBLOC in name of desktop icon..

i would like to rename my shortcut icon without the word WEBLOC in it. how do i do this? what is the purpose of it anyway? it takes up space, and it looks messy. i know it is a WEBLOC,so why does it need to tell me that.. it is unnecessary, and redundant...

That file needs the wedlock extension so that the system knows which app, Safari or whatever browser is your default browser, is needed to open it. Without the extension the file turns into a generic icon and file:
