iOS 13, Siri making calls on speaker phone by default.

Since updating to iOS 13, I have noticed that when ever I ask Siri to make a phone call for me, the call is placed using speaker phone every time by default. I am not asking to put the call on speaker and I have tried restarting my phone with no luck. Every time I say something like, “Hey Siri, call Jim.” The call is placed and put on speaker phone. I then have to tap to turn speak off, and then continue the call.

I hope this is a bug that Apple is aware of and fixing soon.

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

This is on iPhone XS, iOS 13.0

I just discovered a fix. Yes it is definitely broken, here is a workaround that I think works - in a weird way.

  1. Go to Assessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing

There are 3 default choices: "Automatic", "Bluetooth Headset" or "Speaker"

2. Choose "Bluetooth Headset". NOT the default "automatic" - which is broken in iOS13.1

NOTE: I do not use much less own a Bluetooth headset. But it mostly fixes the problem.

If it's like my iPhone 11 Pro, it will be on "automatic" by default - which always got to speaker when using Siri to make a call. But I just tested it using "Bluetooth Headset"., and when I asked Siri to call a number, she responded that she is calling that number using the speaker. But the speaker was OFF. Let that sink in - this a very broken iOS feature.

So, it goes to speaker when it is set to the default "automatic", and doesn't when it is changed to "Bluetooth headset".

I just received notice that there has been an update for IOS13.1.1 to 13.1.2 which I downloaded. It does not fix Siri directed calls that still go to speaker by default. As soon as possible. Very annoying especially when you’re using your Bluetooth in your car which does not go through the car speaker but your phone speaker.

dormeas,

yes, I have the exact same problem. Siri automatically sends the phone call to speaker and it’s really annoying me. Sometimes I forget that it does that, and when I go to put the phone to my ear, I become deaf for about five seconds when somebody speaks through it lol. I’ve tried different ways to resolve this issue, but there is no option on the phone to turn it off. I really hope that they resolve this soon.

I actually read the whole thread and pressing the side button to get Siri helps. When you hold it down and ask Siri to call someone, she doesn’t send it to I actually read the whole thread and pressing the side button to get Siri helps. When you hold it down and ask Siri to call someone, she doesn’t send it to speaker. So the right side button works for me. But I still hope they fix that issue.

The earlier fix that someone suggested has worked for me. Siri still says “on speaker”, but the call does not go to speaker.

hey apple folks, how about a Do Not Disturb for text messaging??? You have one for phone calls, but it would be nice to have one for a text bounce back with a custom message of your choosing. Let’s work on that. I believe android already has it.

Solution posted by Sjtnyc on September 25 works for me. Still says calls are going to speaker but they don’t.

This really is a case of Apple changing something that didn’t need changing without thinking through the consequences.

All they need to do is let us choose for ourselves rather than making decisions for us!

From what I see in the iOS update description it looks like this irritating glitch isn't a glitch after all, but "another great feature" of the update. I have to wonder if they'll ever fully change this back to the way it was since they seem to think it was such a grand idea that everyone should love. When I called shortly after the update, the reps didn't seem to be aware of the change and kept suggesting that I do a full reset. I later read from someone who actually did that and of course it didn't fix the problem - because the problem is a built-in new feature of the update itself. At this point, I think our best hope is that they'll eventually send an update with an option to select the handset as the default preference when using Siri to dial calls.

Me too, I’m have exactly the same issue, I use ear phones so I can use Siri to call and the button on the ear phones to hang up so I don’t have to touch the phone while driving. This bug requires me to touch the phone to transfer from speaker to phone, defeating the whole purpose of using Siri to call

Great workaround! Nothing better than an iOS upgrade that creates new problems, never before encountered. When I put this workaround in place, calls placed via Siri STILL say they will be on speaker but, in fact, they are not. Weird. But good enough until 13.1.2.1. comes out!

I am having the same experience, the phone setting automatically places the call on speaker including when the headset is plugged in. I disconnect the headset and plug back in during the call and the phone goes into the headset mode thereby turning off the speaker. Very irritating when you are attempting to maintain privacy. I do hope Apple will fix this issue.

Yes. Same issue. In addition, when I have my wired Apple headphones in, and use Siri to make a call, the iPhone makes the call using the speaker. The bug is that I cannot simply tap the speaker button to move the call to my headphones. It does not work. The iPhone will not allow me to move the call to my headset. I have to physically disconnect my headset and then take the call off speaker and then plug my headset back in. Not a safe maneuver while driving.

This is a bug not a feature.
