I HAVE THE RESOLUTION. after experiencing this issue myself where the apple watch is requesting a password and you enter the password from your apple phone but then never receive the verification code this is what you need to do. Yes, It is because many of us have 2 apple IDs (1 for personal associated for you only "1st ID" and other possibly used for itunes and app store for family "2nd ID"). On a device (you decide) .. sign out of the apple id associated with your personal and sign into the one that the APPLE WATCH is asking for. This is a temporary sign out ... after you get the verification code to the 2nd ID then you can sign back in using the 1st ID. I have multiple devices so I signed out and back in using a secondary phone that I have. But you can do this on an IPAD or Macbook also. I would not do this on your primary phone. Once you sign in with the 2nd iD .... go through the verification steps on the WATCH again. This will now send the verification code to the device you used to sign into with the "2nd ID". Get that verification code, use it to verify the watch. Then go to the app store icon on the WATCH and choose any free app to download and make sure it downloads. Wait 5 minutes to confirm that you are no longer receiving this message on the watch anymore and then go back to that device you selected to now SIGN OUT using the 2nd ID and sign back in with the 1st ID.
These steps should save you 2 hours on the phone with TIER 2 APPLE Support.
TIER 1 apple support will not be able to fix this issue. If you call apple support, you need to specifically request TIER 2 support.
Be blessed and pay it forward!
Open watch app on iPhone. Press password on watch then press keyboard icon. You will see a dialog box open BRIEFLY on you phone press that and enter your password. Worked for me. What I don’t know is why it happens but I think I’m sneaking up on the reason. Will test it out and report if I’m right.
Touch the keyboard icon on your iwatch but have your iPhone unlocked next to you. On the iPhone you will see a box for your Apple ID password to go in but it only remains visible for about 3 seconds but once you start to input your password it remains. Once finished hit the return key and you’ll have no more problems. Merry Xmas
So I haven’t had it come up for a few days now, an action I took was ......
I went into “Family Sharing” on my iPhone. Family Members list I selected myself as organiser, then selected my iTunes account under “Purchases and Music” and entered in pwd etc to “Confirm Account”. Hasn’t happened again after that 🤞
Prior to the above I also reset my iWatch but issue returned straight away.

So that's your primary App Store ID? Your solution makes sense, but several people here are having a prompt appear on their Watch for an Apple ID they haven't used in years, or one that's a secondary App Store account. The problem is that it's not associated with any device, and so there's no way to authorize the sign in.

But I resolved the issue by temporarily making that the Apple ID on one of my Macs, so the verification code went to that Mac, and then switching the Mac back to my primary Apple ID. Slightly painful, but so nice to get everything back to normal. I agree, though that Apple should fix the bug so we don't have to go through these sorts of fixes.
It's actually not necessary to sign out of your primary Apple ID. You could also make it a secondary ID under System Preferences > Internet Accounts to get the login auth.

Still says unable to verify at this time whenever I do get the keyboard on my phone. Most of the time the keyboard never show up.
You have to log into that Apple ID on your iPhone under settings > passwords & accounts first.
I had the same prop Ken since the update and also have 2 accounts (family and individual). My watch WAS assigned to both accounts. Log into the Apple ID that you don’t want your watch assigned to. Then, go to devices and remove it.
Hope that helps!
only way I got rid of these annoying messages was to disconnect my watch from the iPhone and to reconnect it and installing the apps one by one into the iWatch. Hope the next iWatchOS will not mess it up.
This was a frustrating thing for me. I found it by watching my phone to see what would flash up on the phone when I would hit the little keyboard on the watch. I finally saw that it was an entry box. It flashes on the phone screen so fast I could not even read it, then it goes away! So do this: put your: iphone in your lap where you can quickly touch the box that will flash at the top of the phone screen. Follow the prompts on the watch to get to that PASSWORD then KEYBOARD. When you tap that little KEYBOARD on your watch your phone opens up a box for you to enter the password. You have to be fast. When you finally get to that point and you tap the box on your iphone, a keyboard will pop up, on the phone, for you to enter your password. The first time I did it I entered my itunes apple store password. That worked for about a day. Then when it asked again the next day I entered my iCloud password, because I have them separate for some reason... Anyway once I had entered them both I was done. It never asked me for the password again.
I’ve answered this several times now and it always works. Every time there’s a new update, the message appears. Just tap the tiny keyboard and a dialogue pops up on your iOS device., for me it’s on my iPad.enter your Apple ID and your in!
My watch started requesting that I log back in with my Apple ID after a recent update. When I "rebooted" the watch (press crown and side button), I did not have to log back in. But it is annoying. Apple, please fix! 8/4/20
Hey I had the same problem. What I did to solve it was to sign into the account Apple Watch keeps asking about on my MacBook and then I have put there the password and code and it was done.
After following all the suggestions here, my watch was still asking for my password relentlessly. At the point of desperation, I unpaired it and then set it up as a new watch. So far, this works!
Pressing the crown and side buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears worked for me. I've had to do it twice now over the past few months. Not impressed.
I tried that but the answer was actually that my two phase authentication had been turned off on my phone so I put that back on and but it in.. no more problems. thanks!
