Google requires completing authentication in Safari.

Just migrated from macOS 10.13.6 to 10.14.6. Received the above message from Calendar, which is trying to access my Google calendar.

Unfortunately, clicking Open Safari does nothing. The button turns grey, as if the dialog is waiting for something to happen, but I don't see any new tab in any of four open Safari windows. I'm getting the same behavior after deleting the account when trying to recreate it. This is really exasperating. If I remember correctly, soon after upgrading Safari was updated to 13.0.

Not enjoying this upgrade.

The Google Calendar and Account issues are related to Safari 13 in combination with MacOS 10.14.6:

Yesterday I have upgraded to Mac OS 10.14.6 to Safari 13. Since then I get the message:

"Google requires completing authentication is Safari"

In the Internet-Accounts, my Google Account exists.

But as soon as I click on it, that message appears again. With the options "Cancel" and "Open Safari". Cancel does not help.

For "Open Safari":

  • If Safari is already open, nothing happens, no new window and no login dialog.
  • If Safari was not open, Safari will start, but only with the previously opened tabs.

When I open the Calendar app, the Google Calendar has a warning triangle and does not update my calendar data.

Unfortunately, I do not find a way to authorise again. And the Google Calendar can no longer be used with the calendar app, since Safari 13.

As consequence I have rolled-back to the status before Safari 13 - with the help of Time Machine. With Safari 12.1.2 everything works fine again. Of course, this is not a satisfying solution. Apple will have to fix this issue in Safari 13.

The Google Calendar and Account issues are related to Safari 13 - and not to 10.14.6

I have Safari 13 on two MacBook Pro's. On the one running macOS 10.13.6 I was able to recreate and authenticate the Google Calendar account with no problem, i. e., Open Safari really did open Safari ... and display the Google login page. On the laptop running macOS 10.14.6 I am having the described problem. Since some people have been able to circumvent the problem by reinstalling macOS 10.14.6 from the App Store, which installs an older version of Safari, and not updating Safari, it seems that the problem has to do with the unique combination of macOS 10.14.6 and Safari 13.

I did not need to restart my Mac, I just had to convince Calendar to refresh its accounts, particularly the Google one. I did that by restarting Calendar. People tell me that Command-R would have accomplished the same thing without restarting Calendar. Could it be that restarting your Mac essentially caused whatever app was involved (Mail, Calendar, Contacts) to refresh, but the same result could have been obtained using something less drastic, e. g., by restarting just the app, or by using a command in the app to refresh its contents?
