iOS 13 Photos sync through iTunes causes duplicate photos on iOS devices

Since iOS 13, whenever I do an iTunes sync of my iPad (pro) and iPhone, the Photos library on both get filled with duplicates of most, but strangely enough not all of the photos. To get rid of the duplicates, I have to sync the devices with Sync Photos unselected (which sometimes works) or sync to another Mac with an empty Photos Library and then resync in my own account.

Sometimes it takes multiple syncs tries to get rid of superfluous photos on the iOS devices. (Which I also find odd because I have no photos in iCloud and iCloud Photos is switched off on all devices, so a sync to another account should remove all synced photos in one try).

Does anyone else have this issue?

All right guys -

I have been in a remote wilderness since I last posted here, so I took a while to get back to troubleshooting this, but wanted to tell everyone that I fixed this problem today, and it took very little effort!

I figured that the issue had to be with my Photos app on the laptop, and not with the phone, or with the new Finder sync. I have all of my photos (22,000) organized perfectly into folders of where each was taken. All of those folders are in Finder on my mac, and are in Albums in Photos. I sync everything from Photos to my phone (versus syncing directly from the folders in Finder). When I look at each of the 100 or so Albums that I have in Photos (under the Albums>My Albums menu on the left), there are NO DUPLICATES AT ALL in any of the albums. They are all exactly how I wanted them to be on my phone...BUT, when I click on Library>Photos on the left I see thousands of duplicate and triplicate photos. They only appear there, NOT in any of the Albums that I created and thought that I was syncing.

I got this app from the App Store today:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/photos-duplicate-cleaner/id592704001?mt=12&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

And I carefully followed these instructions on how to use it:

https://www.idownloadblog.com/2016/02/15/how-to-remove-duplicate-photos-on-mac/

It found that I had over 22,000 duplicated and triplicated photos. They ONLY show up in the Library>Photos section of Photos though, which is what your phone is using when is syncs.

After deleting all of the duplicates, I synced my phone again and it went from having 47,000 photos on it, to having 22,000. No more duplicates.

Hope this works for the rest of you. This wasn't a macOS Catalina issue, nor was it an iOS issue. It was an issue with Photos having thousands of duplicates, seemingly from me not importing them correctly when I did it.

Like Richard the infamous - photos app curated out my duplicates too after many hours of plugging in and waiting for it to complete.... However finder is for some reason was still showing almost twice the storage being used for iPad vs iPhone, 32gig vs 16gig being used for about the same photos being synced. Finally today I decided to change a few folders - I edited some photos and re- synced.... NOW, the software for some reason dropped off about 5 gigs of storage From the phone and I’m missing (I guess) about at least 1200 pictures that number wise did not sync. At least the one folder I’ve looked at shows very different number of pictures on the computer vs the lesser amount that’s synced over.

what a joke. Still a f’t up mess.....

It just works....... Sometimes.

I am starting to give up

hope that this update is ever going to happen or get fixed. I am thinking that when time to upgrade going to a Samsung or even google.

This thread has plenty of information about what it could be but the last email from my advisor says “this is the new normal” and that what I can do is sync my photos from I cloud for windows. Reviews are horrible on i cloud for windows. To make the situation worse you only get 5gb free - so more money to apple is not going to be the direction I am going to take!

The advisor told you that this was the new normal? Outrageous. I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro (upgrade froma 2009 MBP with 8gb ram and 500gb sshd) thinking a new computer might fix the issue.

if that's the only reason you bought a Mac, id return it asap if you are still im your 30 days window. I think its 30. I just got the new MBP 16" and I hate the **** cords all over the place - but I knew that going in. Just didnt think it was going to bug me so much and yes I still use a cd drove so another piece to occasionally plug in. got a screaming hp notebook that works great but no dvd there either - micro sd only - cords there too! I kinda miss the old iMac - great display and it worked still good besides the cat5 plug going bad. All these duplicates are a pita. both notebooks had to be exchanged when new - Mac had software and display issue and hp had a battery issue. good luck.

My brand new MBP 2019 16” spends a significant portion of the day with a big dongle so I can plug Ethernet and my iPhone 8.

Out of curiosity, why do you feel that you need a dongle to plug in your iPhone 8? Why don’t you just get a USB-C lightning cable?

Also, I’m in agreement with mrchntmarine; if you bought the Mac just to fix this OS-level problem, you should probably return it.

Waiting on the USB-C To lightening cables to arrive in the mail still but no I don’t plan to dongle forever. Except for that Ethernet connection.

I bought the MBP to replace a 2009 MBP. 2009. That guy lasted a decade and is still going strong as you could ever hope for a machine of that age. So I got it for many reasons and I was additionally hoping that this issue would also be resolved in doing so, but alas, no

OK so I spent a couple hours writing a detailed report of exactly my problem and emailed it to the Apple Advisor who I’ve had contact with to hopefully resolve this issue. This long and detailed email included precise photo counts before and after a single syncs, as well as after multiple syncs and included screen shots to document the photo count increasing with each sync, as well as screen shots demonstrating obviously duplicated photos.

additionally I addressed that my videos are never syncing over entirely either. I personally am having music and voice memo sync duplication issues as well.

I sent the email to the Apple Advisor on Sunday May 17. His work schedule is MonTuesWedSat. I got an email back Wednesday two hours before his shift was over saying he’d like to talk on the phone but I missed that two hour window.

So I will follow up after I speak with him.

Unfortunately.....

I installed iOS 13.5 two days ago and was hoping this might include the fix to my duplication issue. That would have been amazing if they fixed the issue after I gave them all the details.

Sadly, I still have Many duplications after a single sync. Photos went from 9,560 to 10,415 with obvious duplications.

Still waiting on a fix....will followup soon

I never synch my phone or iPad to the Mac. I synch it to my iCloud or a stand alone raid. It is cheaper to spend a little more on the iCloud and no hassles so farX many years. I also have Dropbox cuz I have a ton of photos X scary number of years.

I live on an Island in Hawai'i where hurricanes, and other disasters happens.

This way I have redundant archives, so if one goes out, there are two others backing up.

Of note....I had one IOS update some years ago that lost virtually all my contacts. Thank God for Time Machine.

iCloud is not that expensive. I have am a journalist, retired, on limited income. The other moving parts come from a shared family account, so multiple parties pay for storage, and saving for hardware step by step and selling older equipment to fund expansion. A synch that works has always been simple.

Just suggesting a work around for disasters in case of fire, flood, earthquakes or disasters. I consider it insurance.

Best wishes for your solutions.

To state it briefly…

No.

Syncing my photos to iCloud is not an option I will ever consider.

Apple’s software should work as designed, and this is basic functionality that’s existed since the first version of iOS. Aside from the simple fact that I’m not at all interested in storing my photos in the cloud, if Apple can’t even get something as simple as a photo sync from computer hardware that they manufacture and an OS that they code to phone hardware that they manufacture and an OS that they code, then why in the world would I trust their far more complex cloud infrastructure with this type of sync? If your answer is along the lines of, “well, it works now,” then I could’ve said the exact same thing about iOS 12; that worked. Ah, those were the days.

That used to be me—an Apple die-hard, if ever there was one… an outright Apple evangelist. Now I’m rapidly losing my patience, and I’ve pretty much lost my faith.

eventually, if this issue is not resolved, i will look for a new organization method -- potentially amazon or google. and at that point, the untethering of my wallet and apple will begin.

Indeed; I bought a new MacBook Pro last year, so there’s that, but at this point, it’s just about time for me to update my Mac Pro, iPhone, and iPad Pro to newer models, and there’s absolutely no way that I’m giving Apple any more of my money until/unless I can expect this basic functionality to work as advertised. In a very real practical sense, I can wait for this only so long before I have to look to other hardware/software vendors for something that works.
