iOS 13 Photos sync through iTunes causes duplicate photos on iOS devices

Since iOS 13, whenever I do an iTunes sync of my iPad (pro) and iPhone, the Photos library on both get filled with duplicates of most, but strangely enough not all of the photos. To get rid of the duplicates, I have to sync the devices with Sync Photos unselected (which sometimes works) or sync to another Mac with an empty Photos Library and then resync in my own account.

Sometimes it takes multiple syncs tries to get rid of superfluous photos on the iOS devices. (Which I also find odd because I have no photos in iCloud and iCloud Photos is switched off on all devices, so a sync to another account should remove all synced photos in one try).

Does anyone else have this issue?

All right guys -

I have been in a remote wilderness since I last posted here, so I took a while to get back to troubleshooting this, but wanted to tell everyone that I fixed this problem today, and it took very little effort!

I figured that the issue had to be with my Photos app on the laptop, and not with the phone, or with the new Finder sync. I have all of my photos (22,000) organized perfectly into folders of where each was taken. All of those folders are in Finder on my mac, and are in Albums in Photos. I sync everything from Photos to my phone (versus syncing directly from the folders in Finder). When I look at each of the 100 or so Albums that I have in Photos (under the Albums>My Albums menu on the left), there are NO DUPLICATES AT ALL in any of the albums. They are all exactly how I wanted them to be on my phone...BUT, when I click on Library>Photos on the left I see thousands of duplicate and triplicate photos. They only appear there, NOT in any of the Albums that I created and thought that I was syncing.

I got this app from the App Store today:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/photos-duplicate-cleaner/id592704001?mt=12&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

And I carefully followed these instructions on how to use it:

https://www.idownloadblog.com/2016/02/15/how-to-remove-duplicate-photos-on-mac/

It found that I had over 22,000 duplicated and triplicated photos. They ONLY show up in the Library>Photos section of Photos though, which is what your phone is using when is syncs.

After deleting all of the duplicates, I synced my phone again and it went from having 47,000 photos on it, to having 22,000. No more duplicates.

Hope this works for the rest of you. This wasn't a macOS Catalina issue, nor was it an iOS issue. It was an issue with Photos having thousands of duplicates, seemingly from me not importing them correctly when I did it.

interestingly, i *was promised "something" along the way to compensate for all of this fruitless work. (like you, i spent months as an apple lab rat)

as that was 2-3 senior advisors ago, i doubt anything will come of it. actually, i'm quite certain that nothing will come of it.

and i agree: if not for this forum, i would have lost my mind. it's comforting knowing you're not the only one.

i'm reading a lot of posts/replies here that are finding fault with photos in catalina. i want to reiterate that i am not running catalina. for me, this problem began with ios13 on my phone. (i'm not doubting there are also problems with syncs in catalina: i've ready plenty about these issues. however, it's not just a fix catalina + everything will be fine situation.

There is no top line or bottom line impact to apple's business if they allocate resources to address this problem. None. Zero.

Oh, there will be an impact if they don’t resolve these issues in particular, regardless of whether or not they want to acknowledge it. I bought my new MacBook Pro at the end of last year, but quite specifically because of these Catalina/iOS 13 issues, I haven’t bought the new Mac Pro (which I’d been planning), I haven’t replaced my aging iPad Pro (which I’d been planning), and I won’t be buying the next generation of iPhone in accordance with my usual schedule (every two years). Yet another AppleTV (I own one of each generation)? An Apple Watch? No, and no.

I’ve been a predictable revenue stream for decades, but that’s predicated on the premise that their products suit my needs. My loyalty as a customer is entirely conditional. Apple can’t have any more of my money until “it just works” again.

In short form: NO!

(16k photos, iMac with High Sierra, 10.13.6)

  • Before Updating, i unchecked "sync photos" and synced to delete. About 9k, i assume duplicates have been left.
  • I reseted my iPad, 0 photos left, fine.
  • Updated to 13.4, checked "sync photos", synced, all 16k on the iPad, fine.
  • 16h later, 2nd sync, fine
  • another 8h later, 3rd sync, it does 9k again

In between i did nothing in my Photos App on my Mac.

It's so frustrating.

If I select an image to be used as the key photo for a person in Apple Photos on the Mac, it eventually no longer syncs to my iOS devices. Its .ithmb file in the iPod Photo Cache will become zero bytes.

I’m not sure how long this takes to happen, or exactly what causes it, but there are 471 people in my Mac’s photo database, and not a single one of the images I’ve selected as key photos on the Mac have managed to continue syncing to my iDevices since the upgrade of my MacBook Pro, iPhones, and iPad Pro to Catalina and iOS 13 (which I did on the same day, after they’d each had multiple point releases).

(I’ve kept the Mac Pro on Mojave, because I still need certain 32-bit apps for productivity.)

Hi, I paid my 99 cents and switched to iCloud Photos a few weeks back, but before then I had the exact same problem with Key Photos. It affected photos of people I had deliberately designated as "Key Photo" for the person, as well as for people who only appeared in one photo each, in my entire library... by identifying those "single photo" people, they became by default the "Key Photo" for that person. iTunes sync to iOS13 completely omitted them all. I finally had to duplicate every key photo (renaming them) and "demote" the people in the duplicates so that technically everyone had (at least) two photos in my library... one keeping the "Key Photo" designation, and the duplicate still being identified as that person, but without the "Key Photo" attribute. That was the only way I was able to get them over on my iPad and iPhone.

I wish that Apple would implement smart sync’ing — where it only sync’s those items that have changed.. If they’re gonna do that I’d love to see bidirectional syncing — where I could delete images on my iPhone or iPad and once I re-sync to the Mac that the changes would take effect. I find it way easier to do my weeding out on a device vs the iPad — perhaps because I do it when I’m no where near the Mac..

that's all very well and good. i am not opposed to paying apple $0.99 a month -- but one of the big issues with icloud photos for me is that it's all or nothing. i don't want 39k photos everywhere. i don't need 39k photos everywhere. and it seems like a shakedown to require payment from customers in order to use proprietary/pre-loaded software correctly.

if i could load specific photos to the cloud to update everywhere, i would be interested. that's not much different than how icloud files works: that feature doesn't require me to upload my entire hard drive.

this forum has shifted from the original issue -- duplicate photos during itunes sync with ios 13 -- to a variety of issues with syncs, which makes it hard to rely on any given suggestion. at this point, i will check in solely to see if a software update fixes it. my expectations are low.

exactly. extortion isn't acceptable just because it's affordable.

cynically, this is how everyone makes money now. rental fees to have software work. no ownership. which is why i doubt they'll fix it. the senior apple representative who was assigned to oversee my case became condescending once it was apparent ios updates were not fixing it. my case was marked closed by apple even though the problem still exists.
