iOS 13 Photos sync through iTunes causes duplicate photos on iOS devices

Since iOS 13, whenever I do an iTunes sync of my iPad (pro) and iPhone, the Photos library on both get filled with duplicates of most, but strangely enough not all of the photos. To get rid of the duplicates, I have to sync the devices with Sync Photos unselected (which sometimes works) or sync to another Mac with an empty Photos Library and then resync in my own account.

Sometimes it takes multiple syncs tries to get rid of superfluous photos on the iOS devices. (Which I also find odd because I have no photos in iCloud and iCloud Photos is switched off on all devices, so a sync to another account should remove all synced photos in one try).

Does anyone else have this issue?

All right guys -

I have been in a remote wilderness since I last posted here, so I took a while to get back to troubleshooting this, but wanted to tell everyone that I fixed this problem today, and it took very little effort!

I figured that the issue had to be with my Photos app on the laptop, and not with the phone, or with the new Finder sync. I have all of my photos (22,000) organized perfectly into folders of where each was taken. All of those folders are in Finder on my mac, and are in Albums in Photos. I sync everything from Photos to my phone (versus syncing directly from the folders in Finder). When I look at each of the 100 or so Albums that I have in Photos (under the Albums>My Albums menu on the left), there are NO DUPLICATES AT ALL in any of the albums. They are all exactly how I wanted them to be on my phone...BUT, when I click on Library>Photos on the left I see thousands of duplicate and triplicate photos. They only appear there, NOT in any of the Albums that I created and thought that I was syncing.

I got this app from the App Store today:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/photos-duplicate-cleaner/id592704001?mt=12&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

And I carefully followed these instructions on how to use it:

https://www.idownloadblog.com/2016/02/15/how-to-remove-duplicate-photos-on-mac/

It found that I had over 22,000 duplicated and triplicated photos. They ONLY show up in the Library>Photos section of Photos though, which is what your phone is using when is syncs.

After deleting all of the duplicates, I synced my phone again and it went from having 47,000 photos on it, to having 22,000. No more duplicates.

Hope this works for the rest of you. This wasn't a macOS Catalina issue, nor was it an iOS issue. It was an issue with Photos having thousands of duplicates, seemingly from me not importing them correctly when I did it.

don't do that if you have changed the position! because obviously apple didn't put a button to show it again... because apple doesn't know anything....

so to have the localization back you have to click on "restore original position" or something like that... sorry i'm from italy so i don't know how it is written in english...

But when you click on restore it will restore the original position, so if you have changed that position it will restore the original one... and you will lose all your work!

it should be fine with pictures taken with the iPhone.

I too am disappointed by 1. how long a simple MacBook Pro to iPhone 11 sync is taking - every time I do this the Apple systems want to copy/overwrite THOUSANDS of photos, 2. after the Sync my iPhone ends up with multiple copies of many images - two or more of many photos are in my Photos album.

This does not seem to impact the images on my MacBook Pro. FYI I am using OSX Mojave 10.14.6 - terrified to 'upgrade' to the next OSX out of concerns of finding new problems, and even obsoleting my older Applications. My new iPhone 11 is iOS v 13.3.

Apple seems to be too big to even acknowledge we, who are no longer fully satisfied worshippers of the Apple mystique, even exist. We are often reminded that while this is an apple.com discussion board, that Apple does not even review this content!

I for example, have experienced so many annoyances with Apple over the recent years that I no longer unequivocally suggest Apple products: I bought two new MacBook Pro's whose keys lettering wear off, sometimes in months - Apple says this is 'cosmetic' only and not under warranty (to replace them with what, more new keys that will wear off?), the annoying duplicate photos on iOS devices, that's all before the accursed Taskbar whose 'esc' key causes those of us (like me) who hover over a keyboard to accidentally send E-Mails or lose this or that change) .

This Apple Computer company has become much more like that 'Big Blue' of the 1984 commercial that us early Mac adopters used to poke fun at - with that dictatorial and humorless management style, the dreaded BSOD's, etc. Yes, Steve Jobs is dead.

Trying to play detective on this issue I’ve switched my focus, from the photos that are duplicated on my iPad, to the ones that are *not*. In Photos on my Mac I’ve got several albums of recent photos, and many photos among them never wind up being duplicated on my iPad after repeated syncs, even though many others in the same albums do. My hope is if I can figure out whatever those non-duplicating photos might have in common, I can maybe change the duplicating ones on my Mac so they’ll behave in syncs to iOs13 in the future. So far, though, I haven’t found any reason why any particular photo never gets duplicated. I can take two photos within seconds of each other using my iPhone. They both get geo-tagged for the location, I use the same lens and iPhone settings, etc. Yet after repeated syncs to my iPad, only one of those might get duplicated and the other never does. Why not? Still no clue…

Well, yes, 99 cents is what I'm paying, personally. I'd never used iCloud Drive for documents or backups, so I had plenty of free space at Apple to begin with, and the photo library on my Mac has "only" about 5500 photos and maybe 100 short videos. FWIW, my photo storage must have compressed quite a bit when uploading to Apple; iCloud Storage shows only 17.3 GB there taken up by photos, versus 31.5 GB for the photolibrary on my Mac (I still keep the high-resolution versions locally, too). iCloud has tiered pricing (2.99/mo for 200 GB and 9.99/mo for 2 TB), though my iPhone X is only 64GB total so I couldn't have stored that quantity of photos on it in any event.

I’ve been an Apple die-hard for decades. I even own an original Macintosh, and stuck with them through their major hurdles over the years. Unfortunately, I have to say that in terms of continuity of basic functionality, Catalina is a worse update than MacOS 9, which was notorious for its constant crashes that drove me to primarily use Windows 2000 for productive work until OS X was released.

Today, I have at least one of pretty much everything Apple sells—Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, iPhone XS, iPad Pro, Apple TV, etc., and I’m afraid to say that this might be the end of the road for me. One of the most significant features of the Apple ecosystem, for me, these days, is the photo syncing across devices, and under Catalina, it’s been endlessly frustrating. Syncing my large photo library to the cloud is not an option that I’ll entertain. If they can’t get it working as designed—which was acceptable all the way through Mojave—then that’s enough of a major reason for me to seek other alternatives.

If it no longer “just works,” then what good is it, really? This is just so disappointing.

agreed agreed agreed. this issue has dramatically impacted my desire to buy only apple tech products going forward. i have almost 39k photos going back years. and i am not interested in paying apple (icloud photos) to make it work correctly. (not to mention, i don't need or want 39k photos everywhere. if i could select albums to sync in icloud, i'd do it. all or nothing is not a solution.)

the bottom line is i'm using apple software to sync to apple products. i've worked with senior advisors (and written a letter to craig federighi) and after a month of "try this" to no avail, apple closed my case, told me to keep updating, and essentially acted as if they do not care. so why should i?

I think they should give me a free iPhone for all the time Ive spent w/ senior advisors testing testing testing...... Hours and hours only to not hear back and still have the issues of non-working programs. Troubleshooting - test accounts, deleting and reinstalling apps/programs, taking diagnostics logs and uploading to Apple , then never get a result or even feedback. Worst of all, maybe, additional troubleshooting on my own, sharing a work around and don’t even get a reply to the email..... Just about done with it all. Guess it’s up to the end users now to figure out the work around. Thank goodness for forums like this.
