iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

Older smartphones had more scratch resistant, but more brittle glass.

Since people don't like paying $300 to replace their glass when dropping their phone a foot, cell phone makers overall (not just Apple) moved to formulas that are more shatter-resistant but are slightly more scratch prone.

This issue is solved with a $20 screen protector; you can't apply something for $20 that will stop your screen from shattering in a fall.

I'm not arguing with you. I don't have any scratch issues with my 11 Pro Max because I put a screen protector on mine before it ever got turned on. Whether the analogy works or not, is immaterial. If your phone has gotten any scratches, you should put a screen protector on and be done with this. Otherwise, you'll likely get more over time. Scratches on your screen doesn't make the screen harder to see or use. It's a cosmetic issue, which I'm sure is annoying. But you can do something to stop more.

You are missing the point, William. I read that article.

The decision was made by Apple to strengthen drop protection to the detriment of scratch resistance. That was the wrong decision, as thousands of users are attesting to.

I completely disagree with your assessment it was the wrong decision. Yes, this is a vocal minority of complainers on this thread, but I believe most people, given the choice of investing in a simple, inexpensive screen protector, vs having to pay significant sums of money to replace a broken screen, will believe the trade-off is worth it.

I have ZERO scratches on my iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro Max. They have screen protectors. Both phones have been dropped on more than occasion and yet the screen did not crack. The complete lack of people coming to this forum to complain about having to pay lots of $$ to replace a cracked screen with the 11 series phones confirms Apple made a good decision.

The high susceptibility of some of these phones to scratches is clearly an issue for many people. The decision Apple made to make the screens soft in return for greater impact resistance is a bad move for a lot of people. In the unlikely event of a cracked screen applecare+ takes care of that. In the very likely event of a scratched screen applecare+ does not cover it full stop so users have to pay full price for a new screen out of pocket. We have every right to be irritated. It has been documented earlier in this thread by people having access to larger numbers of these phones that certain ones have softer screens than others, so there is some manufacturing variability or QC involved here.

No one one here in this thread can do anything about the issue. You will need to contact Apple directly.

Calling anyone an apologist is simply incorrect. I am not apologizing for Apple. I don't think Apple has anything to apologize for. I get that you and many others who didn't put a screen protector on your phones are not pleased with scratches. But Apple AND Samsung (and likely LG) are using a more durable (FROM BREAKING) glass formula, which can scratch easier. It's a trade-off they chose to avoid people having to spend huge sums of money to replace their screens.

As to your assertion that AppleCare+ covers this, that's not really accurate. AppleCare+ costs $299 for a 24 month plan or $15/month if one chooses the monthly plan. If you crack your screen, you're still paying over $300 (add the AppleCare+ plan cost + $29 to Apple to replace the screen. So not really any less expensive, is it? And not everyone who owns iPhone pays for AppleCare+.

Yeah, that’s the whole thing. The glass is meant to be stronger against drops so that’s good nothing happens. But the screen gets scratches really easy. Just from placing the phone in a pocket it can get fine scratches. Happened to me on day one. And people are suggesting screen protectors but I find it ridiculous that out of the box it can get scratched that easily. I have owns every iPhone and never use screen protectors and have never had an issue like this.

Have been through some more online reviews (by people who have credibility) and the consensus is that these iPhone 11's are more susceptible to screen scratches (without contact with hard surfaces) than any other phones people have used. Will just be patient and wait until probably the winter (new virus timeline) to see what is on the market. And I do understand the concept that the more shatter proof the screen, the greater the likelihood of screen scratches.

Seems to be the same issue with iPhone SE2 ... I had the early SE and never got a single mark, glass was really resistant. Now the SE2 seems to be a totally different story. Also it happens a lot to couples who both have an iPhone with portruding camera. So when you put the two phones in a pocket together, portruding camera from one phone tends to heavily scratch the other. There is a definite issue there with the glass, the old one was very resistant to keys, coins anything else in my pocket.

Yes, IF you purchased AppleCare+ when you purchased the phone a new screen is $29 if it is actually damaged. And you would be entitled to only two replacements at that price per the terms of your AppleCare+ plan. Also, Apple typically won't replace a screen for scratches under an AppleCare+ plan as that would be considered cosmetic damage not accidental damage.

So the reality is the actual cost for a new screen for MOST people will be:

iPhone 11 Pro Max$ 329

iPhone 11 Pro$ 279

iPhone 11$ 199

That makes a $39 (though there are many good options for much less money) screen protector a wise investment.

I had my iPhone 11 for 2 days before the screen scratched in my pocket. My 7+ went scratch free for 5 years. Apparently the newer and thinner Gorilla Glass had to focus more on crack resistance than scratch resistance.

However, it's borderline false advertising to tout the "Strongest Glass Ever" when it's self evident that it scratches easier than earlier models. They should more proactively recommend a screen protector, or perhaps even include one with newer phones.

All the new bells and whistles don't really matter when you have a $800 phone with a big scratch.
