iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

Older smartphones had more scratch resistant, but more brittle glass.

Since people don't like paying $300 to replace their glass when dropping their phone a foot, cell phone makers overall (not just Apple) moved to formulas that are more shatter-resistant but are slightly more scratch prone.

This issue is solved with a $20 screen protector; you can't apply something for $20 that will stop your screen from shattering in a fall.

Apple at no time advertised the phone as scratch proof. They said correctly so, the phone is made with tougher glass. So no, I don't think they were dishonest. Glass scratches, plain and simple. Pants pockets can and usually do contain very small particles of sand. Sand scratches glass. Knives, razors, keys won't scratch an iPhone. But sand, oh my yes, can certainly scratch an iphone.

It's anyone choice to not use a screen protector. But in doing so, they take a calculated risk and if their phone get's scratches, it get's scratches.

That's why it's valuable to read the Verge article. To make glass more durable, which means less likely to break when dropped, it is more difficult to make that glass harder to scratch. Thus tougher glass, while less likely to shatter as clearly evidenced by the virtually non-existent threads about broken screens on the new phones, can be scratched, as evidenced by this thread.

Actually, I skipped putting a screen protector on my iPhone 6, which was a HUGE mistake. It got loads of scratches, some major, some minor. It was then I decided to NEVER own any cell phone without a screen protector. Perhaps some of you who say your iPhone (insert model here) never got a scratch is more luck than anything else.

It would be WONDERFUL is someone invented glass which can't be scratched. No one has yet. Glass is glass and the reality is glass can be scratched. To think otherwise is foolish.

I’ve had my iPhone 11 for about a month now & just from regular use, I have at least 8 deep scratches in the screen. I’ve been an iPhone user since the beginning & have NEVER had a screen so EASILY damaged. Some of the scuffs look like a greasy smudge but is in fact scratched. People beware: iPhone 11 screen glass is SUPER easy to scratch and WILL get damaged if you put your phone in a pocket with keys or pocket change.

Do what makes you comfortable in the future, but as has been stated several times, "going to another brand" isn't going to accomplish anything:

I have no clue what his situation is. The electron microscope comment might be pure fancy, sure. I have a friend who both he and his wife have iPhone 11. He keeps his phone in his pants pocket and against my advice didn't put a screen protector on it. His wife uses a case which covers the phone when not in use. His phone has micro scratches. Hers does not.

Me personally, I ALWAYS put a screen protector on my phones. And I don't ever put them in my pants pockets. I use a clip case like this, which protects my phone when not in use at all times. The back of the case has clip which rotates and can be clipped to my belt or a pants pocket:

From all of the mohs hardness tests I’ve seen, the 11 glass scratches no easier than did the 10, 8, 7, etc. Glass really is glass.

And from my experience and quite a few friends and family, I can corroborate that science (none of us have these mystery scratches that came out of nowhere). I feel for you if you do, it’s just that they happened because something came in contact with your screen that was a level 6 or higher. Luck plays a significant role, too. I’ve had it happen to me way back on my 7, but, I wouldn’t claim it was softer back then.

Did you remove the screen protector because it was damaged or because it was not entirely cover the screen?

You may want to check what else is in the pocket/bag where you keep your phone, as there appears to be heavy marks on your case as well - close to where the screen scratches are. Film-style screen protectors don't do a good job of keep scratches away (or just about anything for that matter)... it's better to spend a bit more for the glass ones.

Thank you. I actually do mean well. But since Apple has clearly taken the position that scratching one's screen is accidental damage and is not replacing people's screens, even in hindsight, it make sense to put a screen protector on one's phone after the fact to avoid further scratches. Otherwise, the chorus of protests on this thread isn't being read by Apple as Apple isn't on this forum (except the Forum Hosts who read posts for violation of TOU, which is why posts are removed).

Not only is it not covered but it is explicitly excluded from coverage _even_ if you have AppleCare. Some people may have got screens replaced but that would have been an exception rather than an entitlement:

4. What is not Covered?

4.1 Hardware Service. The Plan does not apply to:

(i) Installation, removal or disposal of the Covered Equipment, or the provision of equipment while the Covered Equipment is being serviced;

(ii) Damage caused by (a) a product that is not the Covered Equipment (b) accident, abuse, misuse, liquid contact, fire, earthquake or other external cause, (c) operating the Covered Equipment outside the permitted or intended uses described by the manufacturer, or (d) service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (“AASP”);

(iii) Covered Equipment with a serial number that has been altered, defaced or removed, or has been modified to alter its functionality or capability without the written permission of the manufacturer;

(iv) Covered Equipment that has been lost or stolen. This Plan only covers Covered Equipment that is returned to Apple in its entirety;

(v) Cosmetic damage to the Covered Equipment including but not limited to scratches, dents and broken plastic on ports;

I considered purchasing a new iPhone 11 Pro Max until I brought this issue up to the sales reps at two different apple stores. I could actually see a couple of display units with scratches on the front glass. My intelligence was insulted when both sales people told me to get a screen protector. I haven't used a screen protector on any iPhone "ever" and have never had this problem. Apple should go back to the previous glass used on iPhones 8 and before. Like the crappy keyboard on the prior MacBook Pro, I think this new iPhone glass is not up to specs for an elite/quality product and should be removed from your inventory.

I am not the one complaining...

Point is, there is no fix, solution or whatever by complaining on this forum. If you want a solution or an answer, you will need to reach out to Apple Support and/or leave feedback on their website. This forum are just Apple users not employees.

Hope that makes sense.

Agree. Worst screen ever. I bought a new 11 Pro, opened the box at home, set up at home, never took it out. Then I immediately went to Apple to have a screen protector put on and they said it has 2 small marks - almost like a pin dot chips in the glass only visible in certain light. I took it back to the carrier where I bought it and they would not exchange so back to Apple and had the protector put on. It is not visible with the protector on. I dislike cases and protectors all previous phones never did this and I roughed those phones. But the iPhone 11 series is not tough glass and Apple should step and live by their advertising.
