iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

Older smartphones had more scratch resistant, but more brittle glass.

Since people don't like paying $300 to replace their glass when dropping their phone a foot, cell phone makers overall (not just Apple) moved to formulas that are more shatter-resistant but are slightly more scratch prone.

This issue is solved with a $20 screen protector; you can't apply something for $20 that will stop your screen from shattering in a fall.

Or maybe iPhone should be used in protection box - while it is unpacked it is safe!

That is why many, many people do not remove the phone from its plastic wrapper until the second they can have a screen protector put on and put the phone in a case immediately, often while wearing cotton gloves (usually to avoid fingerprints rather than scratches per se.)

Used all my premium phones (both iphones and other brands) for 15 years in my left pocket - not a single one of them scratched (the most recent one is a note 9 with gorilla glass 5, used phones with 4, 3 and 1 too). Luck, right? People like me got insane amount of scratches on the new iphone in one put in/out from the pocket and for few minutes that is - great durability, right?

If the angle is right, the iphone 11 will break the same way as iphone xs if naked. If there is a good high quality screen protector and case - both will survive. Simple - glass is glass and glass breaks.

How you can think for a positive thing to create a glass that can't survive alone in the pocket for a week to have a little bit better chance to survive a drop naked? I mean, they created a phone that can't be realistically used naked to survive a drop better... naked. Logical? Because a high quality screen protector+case WILL PROTECT YOUR PHONE if dropped, period.

Stop saying how any phone will scratch, because while this is correct - some will scratch easier as you can see and moreover will scratch a lot worse (smudges, super deep scratches, tons of scratches). Some of those pictures are hard to do on other phone even if abusing it on purpose.

Can you compare percent of people who crack their phones when it is dropped and people who never drop phones but yeah. Put it into the pocket.

Even if your fairytale is correct - it is mistake of Apple anyway. They’d add notice right after “strongest glass ever” - but not in pocket! If they would so or if they notice mandatory usage of screen protector or case - I won’t buy it for sure.

So - that’s mistake or lie in any case. And only Apple is in charge.

I don't think you'll get one; Apple is largely agnostic on the issue as everyone's use is different.

For example, if you have an Otterbox Defender case, it has a plastic surface over the screen so no explicit screen protector is needed.

If you never place your phone in your pocket, you may also not need a screen protector.

I don't have statistics on screen protector purchase rates, I am just stating my observations. Apple Stores have a device they use to apply Belkin protectors in-store, and if you spend some time watching you will see they are in use almost constantly.

The same can be seen at Zagg booths in many malls.

It’s all pretty disappointing. I’ve owned a ton of iPhones and this latest 11 screen scratch issue is the worst I’ve encountered in all this time. I didn’t notice them until I was outside on a bright day and the sun really showed them off. I’ve only had the phone for a couple of weeks and I’ve never dropped it. The screen has a bevy or scratches and even something that looks like a mini spiderweb crack. I’ve never experienced this with any phone and kind of want to have Apple fix it.

time to go search and see how they are responding via AppleCare. I’m not paying 200 bucks or whatever they charge for a screen replacement due to very normal usage and wear and tear.

Because there are many of us here who have helped Apple users for decades, and provide factual information rather than just agree that certain behaviors "must" be a defect and "must" be addressed.

You may not like the facts, but they are the facts.

If you really feel your device is not acting properly, feel free to have the Genius Bar examine it and decide whether they will replace it, either as defective or out of good will.

Then next time use a screen protector and case.

However says that this "scratchgate" issue , could be resolve by installing a screen protector, you should know that I bought my new Iphone 11 Pro MAX algon withBelkin Glass protector, the store did not support placement due to the machines causing scratches to the devices , so I had to place it myself:

The insane issue was that when I used the dust removal sticker caused a superficial scratch on the screen , wich I noticed upon removal.

So, you can not install a screen portector without causing scratches to your device. Bad screens Badtch Apple. Stop Selling this Phones and recognizes that it is a manufacturer defect..

That's nonsense; no Apple Store I am aware of has ever had a problem using the Belkin devices to apply screen protectors.

I personally had them use one on my products both on launch day and last Sunday, and have seen them using one on every visit as that is how store staff is trained to install protectors, both glass and film.

Same here, only light scratches but they happened almost immediately too. Why would I buy a beautiful device if I can only use it with a protector that makes it bulky and ugly.

This definitely isn't the "toughest screen we've ever built". My 5s and 6s were both perfectly fine over two years without any protection. The iPhone 8 scratched quickly and easily. And now the 11 is even worse. I don't think my pockets or the dust on my desk has all turned into diamonds over the years. Whatever glass was on the 5s, we need that again.

Oh yeah, and please fix my glass. This phone was €1650... it's not like you don't have the margin to admit a mistake and fix it while still making a profit.

Read one of my previous posts on caring for your phone. I use jeans ALL the time, no screen protector and NO scratches. This was true with my X and XS, too, and yup, my 11 Pro - flawless.

It really boils down to luck of the draw. If there was a defect out of the box I get that. My 7 scratched the first week. Some go years and assume that because they have scratches now, that it’s defective, but as far as what level glass scratches it’s “relatively” similar, yep. Now I WILL say that iPhones oleophobic coating seems a bit susceptible (but even that takes something hard like sand, and, would only show in intense light). Some of the posts in this thread are clearly abusive, regardless of subjectivity.

Same issues as mentioned by the 77 pages of replies. For some reason I’m being blocked from posting to start a new thread and my replies to others on this subject have seemingly disappeared.....Think the cat is out of the bag moderators and there’s nothing offensive or unhelpful in my comments so please stop as I feel bullied by your actions.

I am sure as a customer focused company Apple appreciate product feedback.......

I've seen the tests, but I'd rather believe my own two eyes: my 6S has been through a lot, and yet still looks way better than my 11 Pro which I've basically kept in a bubble.
Surely, when the only factor that changed is the phone there must be something going on with it.
Also, I'm not claiming the iPhone 6S is harder to scratch in general, but that my own 11 Pro is more prone to scratching somehow or that scratches on the latter are somehow much more visible.
Also, JerryRig testing a single iPhone 11 doesn't rule out a production error affecting a small number of phones.

So the despite the physical evidence demonstrates the 11 series is more scratch resistant than the 6S, somehow it is still more scratch prone?

Or...

You were just unlucky.

Occam's razor.

[By the way, the JerryRigEverything has tested the 6, 6S, 11, and 11 Pro Max, so 4 phones, demonstrating the 6/6S were less scratch resistant than 11/11 Pro Max (Apple upgraded the scratch resistance beginning with the 7). Although one can't formally rule out a small batch of bad screens being produced, given the fact that the second most common mineral on the planet which is ubiquitous in everyone's home and work place will scratch EVERY iPhone ever produced, this seems like needless speculation.]
