iPhone 11 screen scratches

my wife and me have put our brand new iphones 11 inside our pocket pants and both screens get scratched the second day of use (mines right in the selfie camera, apple says “without mal function”...). Has someone experimented somethg similar? We are really dissapointed, apple only cares if you have bought “apple care”....we cant use the screen without a protection: worst screen ever....👎

The same happened to my iPhone Pro. I just got it yesterday and kept it in a pocket with nothing else. Less than a day later and there's already a scratch. I didn't have this problem with the iPhone X.

I believe new iPhones still use Dow Corning (pyrex dish) (gorilla glass) as older iPhone models do. It's practically indestructable and does not scratch easily. Try scratching a pyrex dish and tell me your results.

Some people put "screen protectors" on the phone and those can scratch easily but do offer a little protection.

Is that the case here?

I can't say more because I'm still saving up for an upgrade, i have a much older model myself.

iPhone 11 Pro Max 256 mb. I’ve had my phone for two week and just noticed two gauges (both about 1/2 cm long) in my screen and several dozen surface scratches. I baby this thing. No screen protector no case but no drops and certainly nothing abrasive or sharp on the glass. The phone goes in and out of my pocket and then onto my nightstand. I’m totally bummed :(

I had a iPhone 6 Plus for 5 years previously with no scratches or scrapes.

What are my options? Anyone have positive experience with different screen protectors. Hate to do it since at $1000+ piece of hardware should be self-protecting.

I echo the comments in this thread; within 2 days of owning a new iPhone 11 Pro, the screen already showed scratching. It must be from simply rubbing the inside of my pocket which is disappointing. I've never used a screen protector through many iPhone models, and have not experienced scratching this easily.

I’ll add to the echo chamber that we’ve created here - I’m pretty impressed with how quickly this phone has taken damage.

Ive always been a careful phone owner, since my first iPhone (iPhone 5) I have put these expensive electronics in cases. I’ve never been a fan of screen protectors, and frankly never needed them. In my 4 previous iPhones I am proud to say that only one ever had a scratch on it. My new iPhone 11 Max Pro has been living in the same gentle environment, wrapped up in a cozy otter box symmetry case, only being placed down screen side up or in a pocket. I’ve had the phone for a week, hardly enough time to even snag a photo with the incredible camera! This morning I noticed a mark on the screen and found it to be a scratch.

The scratch is only 2 mm long, but it’s deep enough to catch the light and tug at my heartstrings. For a $1200 phone with “The strongest glass ever in a smartphone”, it’s pretty disappointing that the fuzz from my jean pocket is enough to ding the glass. I will be visiting an Apple store to speak with someone and share this tragedy.

I truly hope this was just a case of carelessness on my part, and not a product defect. Apple, here’s hoping you look into the matter.

I bought my iPhone 7 in September of 2016. I used it daily until I traded up to my iPhone 11.

In less than 3 weeks of careful usage, my iPhone 11 has more scuffs on the screen than my iPhone 7 did with 3 years of usage. In fact, I have never had an iPhone that has a screen so easily scratched and I have owned a few starting with the original.

This is not a fluke, this is a problem that Apple needs to take care of. It is definitely not the "toughest glass in a smartphone.".

..so does anyone have any solutions yet? I know AppleCare won’t cover this because its considered a “cosmetic” damage. I bought it online and I’m not even sure if they’ll replace it. Can’t believe i already have a large gash after a week of using it, guess the “toughest screen” advertisement was a scam. All that babying for nothing. And unfortunately, I’m not near an Apple store either to seek fac-to-face assistance. Disappointed with Apple.

Actually:

The reason why has to do with both market demand and glass’ natural qualities. Since glass can’t truly be both extremely drop resistant and scratch resistant, Corning and other glass makers are forced to choose which of those two qualities to prioritize. For Corning, drop resistance takes precedence.

[ … ]

Johnson says that, ultimately, it all comes down to how hard the surface of the glass is. Tempering gives up added hardness in favor of flexibility. More tempering “makes the whole screen more tolerant to overall bending, as in dropping the phone,” he says. “But it does not necessarily improve the hardness of the glass [and] might actually make it slightly worse. It’s the hardness that enables scratch resistance.”

According to Corning’s own tests, Gorilla Glass’ scratch resistance hasn’t improved since 2014.

The Verge: WHY YOUR BRAND-NEW SMARTPHONE WILL SCRATCH JUST AS EASILY AS YOUR OLD ONE

Because they use the same glass, the "easy to scratch" complaints are also levied against the Samsung S10 and Google Pixel series.

Bottom line is anyone who wants to use their phone without a screen protector is inviting scratches, even if the phone is safely stored in pants pockets or a purse.

This happens with EVERY new phone launch. People claim the phone is so much easier to scratch than the previous phone. Maybe the new phone is. But the glass as your post above correctly states is less prone to breaking in a fall. There's always going to be a trade-off. The glass may be stronger, meaning it won't require replacing as often, but it may be easier to scratch, so buyer beware and take appropriate precaution to protect their very expensive purchase.

My phone wasn't even touched by my fingers out of the box before a screen protector was installed. I'll never have to worry about my iPhone screen being scratched. That was my choice.

Indeed. The Belkin magic screen protector installer is amazing. That said, there is a do it yourself at home kit from Spigen, which for the money is also amazing and pretty much impossible to mess up.

Here's a link to it: https://www.amazon.com/Spigen-Tempered-Protector-Installation-Designed/dp/B07HRZPYP2/ref=sr_1_3?crid=MCX992GOMWBC&keywords=spigen+screen+protector+iphone+11+pro+max&qid=1570548816&sprefix=spigen+screen%2Caps%2C182&sr=8-3

You get two tempered glass protectors for an unbelievable price.
