Iphone 11 Pro Max and Carplay not working

I have the new iPhone 11 Pro Max and a 2018 Nissan Maxima with carplay. Carplay worked with my previous Iphone X even after the IOS 13 upgrade but with the Iphone 11 Pro Max carplay just keeps saying it won't start and retries again. Any ideas?

Found a solution here. Please buy a USB male to type c female converter. Use that to connect with the type c lightening cable comes with the iPhone 11. It works immediately when I plug in.

It is the software and hardware compatibility issue. This could be a fix before the official solution comes out.

I have an iPhone 11 and a 2018 Chevy Equinox Premier. My old phone, which is now my wife’s, iPhone XR works with no problems. Recognizes it immediately. My 11 I constantly have to unplug and plug in. Eventually it recognizes it. Changed to a new Apple branded cable and it worked a few times and back to the needing to unplug/plug routine. Took it in to a Genius Bar and they actually ordered me a new 11 because their diagnostic tool said something was wrong with the lighting plug. But this one is doing it as well. Come on Apple!!!

CarPlay worked fine on my 2018 Toyota Aygo since last December. Since I updated to iOS 13, it crashes constantly. This happened on an iPhone XS Max, then on an iPhone 11 that I bought to replace it. This has happened with three different cables.

However, other phones work fine in the car, and my phone doesn't work in another Toyota Aygo (I went to my dealer's to see what they said). So it's clearly something to do with my specific settings that got carried across from the old phone to the new phone. I'm scratching my head about this.

I can confirm that no fixes mentioned in this thread worked for me. This includes starting fresh with “set up as new iPhone” on two different iPhone 11 Pro Max - which rules out any signing in or out of iCloud or settings resets, 5 different Apple original lightning cables - old and new, and the USB-C cable that came with the phone and a USB-A to USB-C adapter. iOS 13.1.2 helped the problem, it doesn’t occur as often, but its still happening 50% of the time. Hoping for a fix from Apple soon...

iPhone 11 Pro Max, 2017 Chevy Volt, CarPlay takes 15-90 seconds to initialize if at all and requires unplugging and plugging back in several times to get it to work. Stays connected once working.

This makes a lot of sense. I’m going to try using the C to A adapter theory. I think that the adapter actually somehow ramps down the bandwidth so that my car will not fail to recognize the phone. Even though my car has a C port I don’t think the algorithm in the phone takes into account using it for CarPlay and charging. I think you have something here.

Regarding someone else saying Apple doesn’t read these posts. What kind of crap is that!!! I love Apple but that kind of crap is crazy. And for the record I did call them when I got the phone and it didn’t work. They said that they had reports of that happening and encouraged me that keeping my phone updated was the best course to take because they would most likely fix it in one of the updates.

Sorry it doesn’t work for you and I agree it’s a safety issue. I persist I believing the problem is related to the new charging algorithms and the power demands of the iPhone Pro Max battery, but it’s cold comfort when none of the suggested workarounds work for you. Intermittent problems are infuriating. Have you asked for a replacement phone?

As of 2 days ago my iPhone 11 stopped working with my 2018 Mitsubishi Triton.

previously it worked fine, I just dropped it off at the dealer this morning and their older models all seemed to work fine.

I am currently running iOS 13.1.3.

I will try forgetting the car and see if it makes any difference.

This is really annoying as i now have no maps/music etc

I have a 2017 Silverado and recently got an 11Pro Max and CarPlay is extremely finicky. It works once in a while and it seems there is zero consistency with things I try, tried every port, resetting, removing, using genuine lightning cable, blah blah blah. Worst of all is when CarPlay is not connecting the Bluetooth connection gets messed up and neither work. It seems to remove my truck from my bluetooth devices on the phone. Also found when the ethernet option comes up everything goes to heck. Not sure if the ethernet option has something to do with it. Can't figure out how to turn that option off to test. I have use an iPhone 8 and XS Max with zero issues with CarPlay, the XS Max was running 13.1.3. I use CarPlay all the time for business and am seriously considering ditching the 11 and going back to the XS Max. Seems with this being an issue on the site for well over a month Apple has no plans on trying to fix it.

2019 Maxima, 11 Pro. I have toggled usb accessories, shut off usb on both my car and phone, my car comes with a usb c port, and nothing works. Rebooting both the car infotainment system and phone does nothing. I've reset general, network, and all settings. 3 out of ten times car play comes up. My old iphone 6 works perfectly every time. Both my wife's and my iphone 11 pro does not. If I still had my X I'd go back.

13.2 comes out later this week, allegedly. I'll wait until then.

That is very interesting @acbme, my sister just bought one and I tested mine since I have issues in my 2018 nissan maxima; no issues at all on her new forester.... I've also talked to Apple and was told they are aware and working on solving the issue which is interesting that they told @craigfromworcester that they've never heard about it. Who are they lying to? In any case, this is extremely frustrating, but if you haven't or anyone else for that matter, please post this on the feedback page for apple.

I would be more hesitant to blame Apple and CarPlay had this been the only iPhone I used with my subaru and CarPlay. But we recently upgraded to the iPhone 11 Pro Max from an iPhone 8 Plus.

That phone rarely if ever had a problem. Occasionally the phone would need to be rebooted...but that was it.

So I am fairly confident it is CarPlay and the iPhone 11 Pro Max and not my car.

I have not had the 13.2.2 running long enough to say it solved the problem; but so far so good.

I HOPE the answer will NEVER be to buy an Apple cable. Not enough options; too much$$ and why would they create the MFC cert if they didn’t abide by it?

Make sure you have the latest OS. And I’ve found restarting more than once after an update is a good thing.
