Iphone 11 Pro Max and Carplay not working

I have the new iPhone 11 Pro Max and a 2018 Nissan Maxima with carplay. Carplay worked with my previous Iphone X even after the IOS 13 upgrade but with the Iphone 11 Pro Max carplay just keeps saying it won't start and retries again. Any ideas?

Also having the same issue on my 2016 Yukon Denali. I've had 2 phone conferences with Apple Engineers and they installed some diagnostic software to see what is going on. They said a reply can take 24 hours to 4 days. Will update.

I have been having this issue ever since I upgraded my phone to the 11pro. I’ve had it into the Geek Desk and they ran a diagnostic. Nothing. They sent a report to Apple. I have called on the issue. Nothing. I have a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek and it will connect, but randomly, the system will crash or I simply will not have any sound for Phone calls, or anything having to do with Siri(messages, voicemails, maps). It is most annoying and when it cuts out in the middle of my driving, presents a safety issue.

I have tried Every. Single. Suggestion offered in this forum and nothing has worked. I have also reset my phone through iTunes and set up as a new phone. I can only get it restarted by forgetting the car, turning the car off for awhile, and rebooting my phone. This happens multiple times per day.

18 October 2019 - I was in the same boat with my new iPhone 11 Pro Max not connecting to my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Apple Car Play through USB and intermittent blue tooth connection. I tried several different types of cables. Some cables only charge, but to connect you need a charge and sync cable. I despise the low quality of Apple cables and have used several other brands successfully for years. The phone connected right out of the box, but stopped working within days. I took my vehicle to my local Chevy dealer thinking my USB plug was shorting due to excessive heat I felt after it was plugged in a while. The port was fine and they updated my vehicle to the latest firmware and software. I didn’t realize 38,000 miles meant my vehicle wasn’t under warranty and paid a lot of money for no resolution. I asked three of the techs to plug their iPhones in (iPhone 8, 10, and XR). Each one connected immediately. I then plugged my iPhone 11 Pro Max into a 2019 Honda and 2019 Chevrolet. My phone connected to each new car right away. The salesmen suggested I trade in my 2017 for a 2019 just so my phone would connect....

Anyway, after 9 hours of talking to OnStar connection experts, Chevrolet engineers, and Supervisors on the Apple support line all telling me to try the same exact things I’d done a hundred times, I still had intermittent blue tooth problems and no USB connectivity. I took a day off work and paid the Chevy dealer more than I’d care to mention. I reset the phone, updated everything possible, and was told I needed a new phone. I knew that was wrong because the phone did connect to new vehicles.

in the end, I loaded the latest iOS beta 13.2 on the phone and after weeks of no connectivity it finally worked. It sucked that the Apple support line never told me about the beta iOS and I paid Chevy techs just to shrug their shoulders. One of them was very candid and said they actually book a lot of appointments for iPhone connection problems after new phones are released knowing they’d never fix it.

Same problem with 2019 Subaru Outback. Took to dealer to update cars firmware. 10/20/19. Still won’t play Spotify or audiobooks through CarPlay on new iPhone 11. Plugged in my old iPhone 6s with a cheap cable and brand new apple cable from my new iPhone 11. No Problem!! Both cables with the old phone work fine. Tried the iPhone 11. Nothing works. Apple this is a real problem. You need to fix it.

Hello everyone, I travel a lot for work and have experienced the same issues with my iPhone 11 Pro Max that everyone else here has had. I believe I have found the issue that's causing all this and somewhat of a solution. It is similar to what someone talked about in this forum, that the phone is having issues with the "quick charge" feature, and it's having problems transferring both power and data. I've noticed that every time my phone is below 99% battery life, Carplay has no hopes in working, but whenever my phone is at least 99-100%, it works without fail. So the solution maybe to just have your phone charged all the way. I know it's not the more effective solution, but if everyone can try this and has similar results, at least we know what's actually causing this.

EUREKA! HOW TO FIX IT. This full-charge strategy doesn’t work for me, but I think I can explain why it works for you.

It works for the same reason that using the original-type-C-to-lightning cable that comes in the box with iPhone 11 Pro Max works for me, and has been working without fail for 15 starts and 3 days now.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s all about BANDWIDTH. I submit that the new “intelligent” charging algorithm that Apple has developed for the iPhone 11 Pro Max consumes more bandwidth than previous phones. And of course, CarPlay consumes a lot of bandwidth between our cars and our iPhones.

I’ve been doing some experimenting with different cables. I have found that the new ANKER Type-C-to-Lightning cables ALSO make CarPlay work, when connected to my Mercedes with a generic Type-C-to-Type-A adapter. EVERY TIME, without fail..

WHY? Well, perhaps the Lightning-to-Type-C-cables have a different chip that provides more bandwidth than their Lightning-to-type-A predecessors. This enables them to transmit CarPlay data PLUS additional power that may be needed to charge the larger iPhone 11 Pro Max batteries using the new battery optimization algorithm

I don’t know if this is true, but it seems reasonable, and the proof is in the pudding. Just get yourself an Apple OR Anker Lightning-to-Type-C cable, and attach a type-C-to-type-A adapter, and I’m betting your CarPlay woes will be over.

Similarly, if you give your phone a 100% charge prior to connecting for CarPlay, then your cable won’t need to charge your phone, and you MAY have enough bandwidth to boot CarPlay with your old Cable.

Finally, whenever Apple gets around to fixing this flaw in its new charging algorithm, CarPlay will probably work, with our old cables.

P.S. This bandwidth theory would also explain why cars that provide WIRELESS CarPlay have no trouble with the iPhone 11 Pro Max —because they don’t need to rely on Lightning cables of any type to transmit their data,

PARTIAL PROOF. I’ve been doing some experimenting with different cables. I reasoned that if the problem were bandwidth, then any other new-generation, Apple-certified, USB-Type-C-to-Lightning Cable should also make CarPlay work, So I bought a brand-new, ANKER, Apple-certified, Type-C-to-Lightning Cable, hooked it up to a generic USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, and used this to connect my iPhone 11 Pro Max to my Mercedes, and...

TADA! CarPlay booted! I tried it ten more times and it booted every single time.

This makes a lot of sense. I’m going to try using the C to A adapter theory. I think that the adapter actually somehow ramps down the bandwidth so that my car will not fail to recognize the phone. Even though my car has a C port I don’t think the algorithm in the phone takes into account using it for CarPlay and charging. I think you have something here.

Regarding someone else saying Apple doesn’t read these posts. What kind of crap is that!!! I love Apple but that kind of crap is crazy. And for the record I did call them when I got the phone and it didn’t work. They said that they had reports of that happening and encouraged me that keeping my phone updated was the best course to take because they would most likely fix it in one of the updates.
