Iphone 11 Pro Extreme lens flare

Hi,

I took some low light footage on my iPhone 11 pro and it turns out useless because of how much lens flare is visible. It doesn't happen on other phones or digital cameras. The footage looks really bad. Here is an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kCu9v7_AGE

A defect would be considered a green apple in a red sack (no pun intended), and in this case it seems to be a design factor of the lenses, which would make it normal for the phone. Do I think that justifies it? No, not really, even if professional cameras have flare, which they do by nature, it would not be nearly as harsh as the iPhone 11's. That said, take a quick trip onto Google, and search any other flagship with a similar 12mp camera, you will hear similar complaints.

A new phone will not fix the issue unfortunately. In my case I had the camera replaced at first and after showing them evidence that the "problem" persisted they gave me a new phone, which still does the same exact thing. I use lens flare for creative purposes all the time, but this is by no means pretty, let alone the ghosting during nighttime videos. I've obviously seen flaring on other non-apple phones but up to this point none of them was able to bug me enough to prompt a post on this forum. At this point it seems like we'll be using our hands as lens hoods for a while.

Just keep messaging tech Youtubers until one of them responds, maybe that'll help bring it to Apple's attention :/

They didn't. Either reviewers were sent peach perfect ones, or they didn't take enough photos to expose this. It seems to me that a lot of this is most present at night, and I do recall reviewers mentioning it, but saying its probably just the small sensor. Smaller reviewer channels who buy their phone off the shelf like the rest of us did mention it heavily and advised people to consider that before purchasing the handset.

That’s very insightful. We’re all having the same issue. If they don’t replace it with a New product, I’m going to ask for the refund.

I read somewhere that there is only a handful of phones that we’re having this issue. That the newer ones were fine, does anybody have a brand new iPhone, if so, are you having issues? I pre-ordered mine for the release date and it’s Defective in the Refurbished model too.

I mentioned it before, but if you call Apple’s customer support and tell them the issue they will offer a replacement new phone for $99, or I can go in and have my lens repaired, I didn’t want to spend more money on a phone that is as expensive as a used car so I brought it into my Best Buy and they repaired it under warranty, and not my AppleCare+ service so it didn’t mark my account.

I don’t use my camera on this phone as much as I thought I would and It’s not the main reason I replaced my Note 10 with this, because the Note 10 had a wonderful camera despite the over processed photos, but the battery of Android phones, Samsung in particular, are horrible compared to what this 11 pro max can offer for me. I go 3-4 days without charges where on my s8 I’d be lucky to get 3 hours of screen on time in a day with the same usage I do now.

Something I have not seen on this thread is comparing to a similar performance Sony DSLR or Mirrorless camera, as Sony is the one that makes the lenses for Apple.

Just saw this guys video on Reddit. Christmas Market, lots of lights, perfect scenario to test our problem. It seems that his phone is working perfectly, no flare at all. Either he has a good unit or he has some really good editing skills. What do you think?

the key word here is parts not the whole phone.

Also, the last thing I want is going through the hassle of discussing if my less-than-a-month old phone is defective. I know the prices of this phones are somehow the new normal but this device is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. They slap the "PRO" on the name, however footage with the kind of goshting and light artifacts I'm having are nothing of the sort.

Not here because this is fun.

This is the iPhones native camera app at work, for why you see flickering. I’ve been using third parry camera apps that allow you to change ISO as well as shutter speed, this can dramatically remove unwanted flares and allows you to shoot in raw which allows you to edit exposure without loss of detail.

There are also plenty of good photo editing apps such as PSE which allow you to correct flares easily, and you cannot tell that it was ever edited in post

My experience with Apple over the years it is that they protect the product, they write better software, they use the best components, they test and they deliver the best products in the market. That’s what a great brand does. If a company has a problem, they correct the problem, they have recalls, it’s just an industry think. Look at Samsung did when they had the battery, they took care of it. So it’s not a fault, it’s testing your products and making sure they perform to your brand promise, your product promise. They are aware that they have an issue, I’m sure they’re going to take care of it. They’ve already tried to fix with the software and it didn’t work. I don’t think it’s fault or blame, it’s just doing what’s right and fixing a problem They are aware of.
