Iphone 11 Pro Extreme lens flare

Hi,

I took some low light footage on my iPhone 11 pro and it turns out useless because of how much lens flare is visible. It doesn't happen on other phones or digital cameras. The footage looks really bad. Here is an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kCu9v7_AGE

I recommend contacting Apple support. I called right away after I noticed it, was on the phone for 10 minutes, was offered 4 different options;

  1. Run more diagnostics on my end to determine if it was software
  2. Go to my local Apple store or Authorized repair to get my camera module replaced for free under my one year warranty for the product (not my Apple Care+)
  3. Send it in via mail to get the phone repaired
  4. Get a replacement device mailed to me through their mail in program for $99

I have a local Best Buy in town where I live, so I went in the next day and had them run through their procedures with diagnostic tools and checks, then proceed telling me I could either drive to an Apple store who had the part (2 hour drive) or wait a week for him to order the part. Week passed, got my phone in, took about an hour, presto, new camera setup, much better results.

If you can, definitely do #2 and get the new lens it is by far the best option. I wouldn't do #4 because you could get a refurbished one (which isn't acceptable for an investment like this to get a used item) that likely never had its lens replaced.

Best of Luck

Apple doesn't respond to feedback provided via the feedback link. They NEVER did when Steve Jobs was at the helm either. People who provide feedback can be assured by the notification in the link they sign into that feedback is read, but not responded to. It has ALWAYS been this way.

You must not have read this statement right at the top of the feedback page you used:

Use the form below to send us your comments. We read all feedback carefully, but we are unable to respond to each submission individually.

I went Apple Store today, the guy from Genius Bar said that’s normal. I showed this discussion and he said any random guys can write everything they want on the Internet and he rejected the fact that it’s hardware defection. And my phone didn’t get any service or repair. What should I do? My location is Brisbane, Australia.

Hi William K.

Unless you were monitoring my almost 3 weeks of phone conversations with Apple support, you have no idea what explanations and statements from Apple engineering (via the Support rep) were spoken to me. I won't get into it with you here on this forum, and I do appreciate your opinions, but your comment to me that "Your argument is quite inaccurate." is purely guesswork – unless of course you were monitoring my phone calls and choose to falsely recount them.

As I've stated previously, my only goal here is to hopefully nudge someone, anyone, at Apple to fix the problem or at very least issue a full public statement – and a technical report that supports & proves theirs and your position that these highly-defined, lens-flare-like floating artifacts are "normal" to ALL smart phone cameras and traditional camera systems.

And, I'll state it again, the iPhone 11Pro is a remarkable device – as are some competitive devices. But these bouncy, glowing scene-marring 11Pro image system anomalies appear in addition to the expected (or normal) results when specific types of light enters a lens and hits a digital sensor.

Hi again M: Yeah, I can see the floating artifacts in the dark sky when the Florence clip first starts. BUT, my 6S did not produce these crisp critters. Yes, it did produce lens flare. I'm on assignment right now but will post the first video I shot that brought the problem to my attention when I can break-away. BTW, I've been directing photo shoots and commercials for decades now – and I'm also a freelance photojournalist. Doesn't make me smarter but I do have a keen eye for imaging.

Hi William,

I have consulted the reference you quoted Edmonds Optics: Anti-Reflective (AR) coatings. Here are some extracts which says the exact contrary to what you wrote earlier:

1) “...a variety of anti-reflection (AR) coating options that vastly improve the efficiency of the optic by increasing transmission, enhancing contrast, and eliminating ghost images...”

2) “Many low-light systems incorporate AR coated optics to allow for efficient use of light.” This one is especially important as you claimed that anti-reflective coating typically reduced low light performance when in fact it is the exact opposite... Camera lenses anti-reflective coatings are specifically meant to increase transmission but reduce reflection and refraction, irrespective of light conditions.

As I quoted months ago, I studied optics at university some 35 years ago. The fundamentals have not changed and my memory still works although I work in a totally different field of fluid mechanics & measurement.

I very much doubt it will ever get fixed for the iPhone 11 series.

These phones are done already.

Pretty soon the iPhone 12 series will be released and the iPhone 11 will be near history. These 12 months cycles are so short that Apple will certainly not even think about it for the 11 series. They may think about it for the 12 series but even this is not certain. We spent our money, we got a phone with its pluses and minuses and that’s it. It is a “take it or leave it“ philosophy and if people are not satisfied they can either return the phone fast or tough...

I went to school too, and even the physics knowledge I learned at school tells me where the problem is. I have three eyes to see what is happening in the world, the topic that I'm bored with is just this, the camera is a very important issue, and the occurrence of the problem has created a hatred against apple, I gave $ 1200 for nothing.

I'm not trying to hate on Apple or anything, just wish they would improve this issue, and Huawei shows it can be done!
Hoping that the 12 Pro Max will do better as I want it to be an option for me - the flexibility of Apple ProRAW is something I would love to have when shooting stills.

Huawei also has other styles of lens flare, reduced low light performance and, let's not forget, cannot be legally purchased in the United States.
