iPhone 11 Pro flash modes missing

I have an iPhone 11 Pro running ios 13.1.1. In the Camera app if I click on the flash icon in the top left it just disables the flash and changes the flash icon to have a slash through it. Clicking again on the flash icon (now with the slash through it) enables the flash and removes the slash in the icon.

In all other iPhones I have used, including an iPhone XS running ios 13.1.1, clicking on the flash icon brings a choice of flash modes: Auto / On / Off.

I called Apple Support about this and they suggested to Restore the factory settings of the phone. I don't want to take this drastic action now since I don't want to have to redo all of the settings I have changed. I'm also not convinced that it will fix the problem.

Does anyone else have an iPhone 11 or 11 Pro that can tell me what they see when they click on the flash icon in the Camera app?

Any suggestions for how to get the selection of flash modes to display?

Flash is there but requires an extra step. I am on version iOS 13.1.2 so I’m surprised Apple Support did not know this Information.

  1. You need to tap on the arrow in the middle of the screen when in camera.
  2. at bottom you’ll seen flash symbol, click on it. This is where you can make change to Auto, On, Off.

This is an extra step which is silly. Hopefully they will change to the old way so the quick change can occur and you don’t miss the moment.

Thanks so much!!

I’ve had an 11 Pro since release date and honestly thought Apple has totally removed the forced flash feature, which I used a LOT! They might as well have, since I don’t have time to try to remember stupid unnecessary extra steps when all I want to do is take a picture. 😡

PLEASE FIX THIS PAPPLE!!!! The flash icon in the upper left should have three choices: on (flash), off (with arrow through it) and auto (cap A).

This is as dumb as turning WiFi OFF (or so you would think...) but only having it DISABLED until an arbitrary time (of Apple’s choice!) the next day. Who thinks of this crap?

I’ve been a photographer for nearly 50 years & don’t need Apple telling me when I should use a flash... There are times the sun is behind my subject & I need the flash to “fill” the face/object. The method Snow1975 suggested is helpful but only sets the flash to ‘auto’’ or ‘off’... I want “force flash” back at the top as a choice, as it USED to be - right out in the open, 1 click, easy to do. For no reason, Apple has hidden it now! 😞 (They did the same silly “let’s hide stuff and add more steps” thing with the choices at the bottom of ‘Mail’ but reverted back to the far better system - more apparent choices - with the last software update.) PLEASE APPLE - fix this hidden “force flash” issue in the camera app too!!

Also, I would like a simple “1 tap” method right at the top, in the open, to turn night mode off. My husband installs motion sensor lighting & I want to show people how bright the lights are at night but it’s impossible to do it accurately since night mode makes every picture I take at night look like it was shot mid-day! 😏

Yep... it seems like they were attempting to make the use of flash more automatic so you don’t have to set it on for it to work, but at the same time, there’s situations (especially on video) were you want to just set it on, and adding the somewhat obscure menu wasn’t the cleanest approach. I think being able to toggle through Auto, Off, AND On through the button in the top left was the best move. Maybe they’ll change it in a future update!
