Error 4010 is usually an interference via your firewall or Antivirus. If you go into Windows Security and go to the Firewall & network protection tab, you can disable your public & private firewalls temporarily while you restore & update your apple device. You're welcome in advance :)
I'll be honest, I don't know what I did, but I'll tell you what I did before it worked.
Enter the itunes match option that remains in the store tab, then, try to restore but, while I was extracting the firmware, connect and then disconnect the iphone several times and obviously I do not detect the iphone well and then connect it normal and I started again to start the process but this time I do restore the most normal!
That 's what I did
sorry if there are things misspelled
I do not speak English!!!
Apparently the only Apple employee that knows what error code 4010 is the person who created it. My support person has been trying for a long time now and I'm having trouble finding a direct answer on the internet. If you see an error in iTunes on your Mac or PC is no help with error 4010. People should not be directed to that page.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I had a friend with an Apple computer try to restore my phone for me and it worked on the second try. Was able to restore the back files without issue. iPhone's working as it did before. Problem solved! Cheers!
Thank you, Andre! I didn't reinstall itunes since months and I was stuck on update 12.1 - my phone kept updating it and nothing helped. This time deleting and reinstalling itunes worked! I don't know why four times I did it last year it didn't help, but this time it did :)
I guess fifth time was a charm for my phone.
but it's funny that I get same issue with apple cable...
@BetterThanSupport
This is the only fix I could find all over apple's website. Thank you internet stranger.
thanks it worked, when i turned off fire walls new error came out (75), then i found answer that all i have to do is to do everything once more and it worked!!!!!
I have done everything listed in the replies. I have made sure and used the right cable. Itunes is up to date as well as windows. Firewall and antivirus are disabled and yet it is still stuck on preparing iphone. It is in DTU mode as i type this plugged into my laptop stuck on the preparing screen. Does anybody have any idea what is going on?
The problem started when I tried to install the new iOS. Already tried restoring the phone with all antivirus and firewall protections turned off. Must try finding another computer. Was going to try with my old Dell, but it's too old, I'm unable to upgrade iTunes without the computer freezing up. Thanks for your suggestions.
So having this error its really annoying that the company who created a great device has so many restrictions on this. Error 4010 is brick error meaning that it might not even work i hate this so much
I'm having the same problem: I the phone got stuck on updating a long time ago and each time I try to update it by iTunes it downloads all, prepares the phone and then when it's supposed to update it I get error 4010 and the phone disappears from iTunes.
And it's not the firewall or antivirus, I checked that option.
Literally the greatest! Thank you soooo much!!
No problem, glad I could help!

If you still can’t get it, you can send it to me for repair, I don’t charge much for this kind of issue.
It worked. Thanks.
