Wireless CarPlay - No Internet Connection BMW - Version 2

I wanted to post the resolution to this same issue in a previous post (Wireless CarPlay - No Internet Connection BMW - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8562181) but that’s been closed.

My iPhones, XS Max and now 11 Pro Max, could pair with CarPlay and most CarPlay features work. However, when I wanted to stream from the Apple Music and the music isn’t stored locally installed on my iPhone, I always got a Siri error message saying there’s no internet access and that I need to Enable Cellular Data. Cellular Data is Enabled and all the apps needed are allowed access.

As it turns out, it’s car’s CarPlay that needed to have its Cellular Data Enabled. I stumbled onto this by happy accident I selected the Music icon in CarPlay and then I asked Siri to play an album that I did have downloaded. Siri displayed a button on the car’s screen allowing me to Enable Cellular Data. Voila! That was the solution. I’ve searched tons of posts, manuals and YouTube videos and nowhere was this cell data button ever mentioned.

Here’s a basic list of the steps that I documented. I had to write it down because this will happen again in the future - probably when I get a new iPhone and won’t remember what I did.

Fixed Apple CarPlay (This applies to iOS 13.x.x, iDrive 6 and 2019 BMW F90 M5)

-[iPhone] Under ScreenTime, Content & Privacy Restrictions, Enable this feature

-[iPhone] Select Allowed Apps Enable CarPlay (and any other apps you want)

-[iPhone] Ensure Cellular Data is Enabled and Enable the Apps that are towards the bottom of the screen

-[iPhone] Select General and then CarPlay. You will see the Car’s Bluetooth designation in the My Car

-[Car]Removed iPhone device from the iDrive Settings

-[Car] Select and Pair the devices (follow the on-screen prompts)

-[Car] You should now see in the Wi-Fi section on the [iPhone] the unique name listed under the Other Networks section (***Note*** Do not select the Wi-Fi network. It will automatically select and use it and it’ll be displayed in the main screen of the Setting under Wi-Fi

-[Car] Go to the CarPlay screen and Select the Apple Music icon. Request Siri to play a selection that’s not stored on the iPhone and when it prompts saying it can’t connect to the Internet and to Enable Cellular Data it should prompt on the car’s screen to Turn On Cellular Data

-[Car] The previous action is what fixed my Internet/Cell Data issue
