iOS 13.1.2 - Email not being marked as read when I read it

Hi, had this problem with every version of iOS 13 to the [current] 13.1.2.

When I select an unread email, it goes into the email and doesn't mark it as read.

Also, if I press the delete button on an email the email 'swooshes' off the screen and the same email is presented to me underneath, without it being deleted.

Just putting it on here so Apple have more awareness of the problem (yes, Apple staff do 'watch' the discussions).

Try going in to your outlook or office 365 account from a computer web browser and removing all mobile devices. Do this by opening outlook online then settings >all settings >General > mobile devices. Then remove the account from your phone through the passwords and accounts. Finally, add the account back. It seems the upgrade to ios13 creates another iPhone activesync object within the office 365 account. Once the objects are removed and only one is created again, it works fine.

This seemed to work for me so far.

I’m not overly familiar with Gmail configuration, but I know gmail has device management capability and there is a way to remove old device accounts.

Regarding Twitter and Facebook, turn off 'General->Background App Refresh' for those two. That should help your battery life. iOS 13 introduced more multitasking that probably resulted in you seeing that battery life change. Also, if your phone service provider is not serving a good signal as before (too many clients on the towers) that can impact battery big time. I switched from AT&T to Spectrum (rebranded Verizon) to gain 40% better battery life on my iPhone 8.

I also have this problem since 13.1.0. It issue happens on both of my O365 accounts.

Reading messages in the preview pane (landscape mode) will show the message, but deleting it does not remove it from the list. I need to delete it a second time to make it disappear. In my case, the problem is intermittent. It will not work properly first thing in the morning, but will work properly later in the day. Also, sometimes it will happen on one account, but not the other. Restarting the iPad doesn't make a difference.

No, Apple doesn’t have quirks. You have a configuration problem with your account setup. Being unable to send and not seeing email marked as read have a common cause; the communication between your phone and the email server is not working reliably. When you mark an email as read the phone attempts to notify the server that you have done so. If it can’t reach the server it doesn’t get marked as read. Sending is the same idea; the server must be notified that you have mail to send. Most likely you don’t have a username and password for the outgoing (SMTP) server settings on your phone. Or you have 2 factor authentication on your AOL account, and haven’t set up an application specific password for the iOS devices.

Just to clarify — while there are various people experiencing various issues, the core original issue is a local one, not network related.

That is, when people read their mail in Apple Mail on mobile devices, the mail is not being marked as read.

We've observed this in cases where people only have one device, and where their only mail account is their Apple mail account and they're using the device and Mail "out of the box" with default settings and a new Apple email account.

So this is likely either a bug, or an error in design and implementation.

It's not likely to be a user error.

In the cases we've seen where users have multiple devices, when the mail is manually marked as read on one device, user's other devices do update the read/unread status correctly. Again, this suggests the issue is local to the device.

The fact that that there are users who aren't experiencing the problem isn't particularly relevant — very few bugs or design/implementation errors affect all users.

I'd recommend that all people having this issue or a related one take the additional step of reporting it via the Apple feedback submission form.

Cheers folks

Dear Eickmeier,

First, your "accusatory" judgy statement at the end, is not "kind".

Second, I asked for advice, weighed what was given and came to my own conclusions, without any opinions. That's what this forum is for. You have a right to complain, however, it is wasted on me. Perhaps you may wish to complain to Apple or AOL.

Thirdly, your statement is untrue. I'm a "realist" and problem solver. My reality has been explained as I see it, my devices becoming outdated, and my resolution is to change my app to one that does work. I'm not asking anyone else to follow my lead. That's not being "nonchalant", it's actually me being proactive for my problem which is why I asked the original question.

I have resolved my issue, so unless you have kind words for me, please refrain from replying to my post.

Thank you, and wishing you and everyone a happy and safe holiday.

Your car manufacturer is not responsible if you put low quality fuel in your car and the car doesn’t work. And there is more than just Apple involved in an email exchange. In addition to Apple there is the provider of your router for Wi-Fi, your ISP for an Internet connection, your mobile network provided for your cellular connection, the network provider for your email account and the email account provider. A glitch in any one of these can cause the problem being discussed in this thread.

When you mark an email as Read a message gets sent to the email provider through all of the network providers I mentioned, then the email provider sends an acknowledgement back to the phone. The email provider also sends notifications to any other email clients that access the account that the message has been read. The message is not marked as read on any devices until this process completes on all devices.

If the message is not marked as read on your phone there was a failure in the communications process. This has nothing to do with the phone.

Actually if you sniff the data sent between the phone / iPad (I use wire shark) you will see (though technically you will not) that the app fails to update the server that the mail has been read.

Under the imap protocol, only one device has to request the server to mark the mails read (seen) - the rest of the devices pick up the status when they connect - the server does not go out to them to tell them it's read.

If you are experiencing this problem on an iPad but not on other devices like I was, here’s one possible fix that worked for me:

My iPad Pro stopped marking viewed messages as read. My iPad mini and iPhone both were working normally. Happened with all email accounts.

In Settings → Mail → Swipe Options, my Swipe Right action was set to Mark as Read. I changed it to Archive, force-closed the Mail app, and reopened it, and things began marking as read normally immediately.

Hope someone finds that helpful.
